My latest Locus column, "Teen Sex," explains why I think young adult literature should have sex -- and other "mature" topics -- in it.
There's really only one question: "Why have your characters done something that is likely to upset their parents, and why don't you punish them for doing this?"

In today's Observer Business column, John Naughton discusses what a ripoff it is for ebook vendors to "sell" you books with abusive, multi-thousand word "license agreements," pretending that because you bought your book over the network, it wasn't a sale, and so you don't get to own it. These "lice... More.
The Scottish veterans charity Erskine surveyed 2,000 young people between the ages of nine and 15 about World War I and II. hmm... i don't see emmet otter.
That is NOT Emmet Otter's Jug Band with Steve. It's Lubbock Lou and His Jughuggers. Emmet Otter's Jug Band is fronted by...well, Emmet Otter.
Emmet Otter's Jug Band - Barbecue
Ooooops! Thanks!
Emmet is decidedly more endearing than Lou. Perhaps moreso than Steve Martin, even.
Here's another dedication for the boingboing brother and sisterhood.

I've always liked Steve Martin.
Hmmmmm... Steve Martin and Jim Carrey improv comedy: Who would win?
@ TOM
Certainly not me or anyone in the audience.

Statler: Steve Martin and Jim Carrey improv comedy: Who would win?
Waldorf: Certainly not the audience!
Statler and Waldorf: OH HO HO HO!
I'm a lot bigger fan of Martin than of Carrey, but in an Improv-off, Carrey would probably win it in a walk. If you've read Born Standing Up, Martin meticulously crafted even the most wacky-seeming, casual remarks in his act based on a careful reading of comic-audience dynamics, joke structures, yadda yadda yadda. He probably had to improvise back in his Disneyland magic act days, but I doubt he's exercised those muscles much at all in the last 30 years since he bailed on stand up completely.
Cool, thx for the info - I've heard that Andy Kaufman was better than Carrey - someone told me they found some video of him doing improv (I can't find it) they said his was a funnier, weirder act than Carrey's (who tends to lean towards funny/dumb imo). I could only find Kaufman doing his bits on SNL - which were only OK to me.
"Heyyyy. . . this guy's good!"
This is a fantastic episode of The Muppet Show. It's one of a kind in that the laughter you hear throughout the show is NOT a laugh track but that of the actual crew and performers, particularly when Martin is doing his thing. The episode can be found on the season 2 DVDs.
Who would have guessed that Kermit is actually green trash…?
Heh heh, Jughuggers.
Excellent!
FWIW, in the "comedy" community, Steve Martin is typically given a load of crap because... He plays banjo... That's it. It's incredibly refreshing to see a blog actually praise and enjoy this guy's talent.
He is my hero.
Banjos, puppets and cannons.
What's not to like?
Squeal like a ....uh, Piggy.
