Lonin @8, I hear what you're saying, but I don't think it's a character flaw for someone to change their opinion as new information becomes available, like when the matching costume was found.
Loren is a Fortean, and as such he's skeptical but keeps his mind wide open. I think that's a good mindset to have when navigating our weird world.
I'm sure Loren was also hopeful that this body was going to turn out to be the real deal. I know I was.
Travis Louie edition from Pressure Printing
August 8, 2008 11:26am
Brad from Pressure Printing says:
"The intaglio print is a polymer etching from a scanned image of Travis's painting. The super close up, in the detail pictures, does make it look sort of like a mezzotint, but it is actually the random patterned screen that breaks up the image so that you can print it as tiny little dots. Not quite
as glamorous as a true mezzotint, but it is very rich and complimentary to the painting."

JOSHMILLARD @554, IMO, that's a very interesting way to frame the questions. Personally, I'd really like to see more of your #2 classification emerge. Honestly though, I'm not that experienced myself in online community building. I was a semi-active participant in the WELL for many years, but never a topic leader or facilitator. I am interested in learning more about how one can foster growth in the direction of #2. I think we do get there from time to time on BB, and our moderators help direct us there by keeping the threads on topic so actual conversation can develop. But maybe there are features or structures we can work on to encourage more of it. Thanks!

JEBLIS @539, I think you're right. I didn't really mean "drive-by commenters" as you describe them. Sorry about that. I was really referring to people who don't even read BB at all but do like to complain about it, and just came to the site for the sole purpose of giving us grief. Of course I can't provide any data on that, but it is a gut feeling that I think is correct.

JOSHMILLARD @515, We already apologized for not handling the situation well when the news broke. That said, none of us were interested in responding to a Valleywag "article" or random bloggers screaming at us. I believe that the proper response time was somewhere between when our friends and community members (not drive-by commenters trying to stir shit up) became alarmed and when we actually made the post. Clearly we erred toward the latter and for that, mea culpa. Again.

SUMER88 @490, yes, yes, and yes. I like your suggestions a lot too. The idea of an occasional thread to talk with the community about ideas, suggestions, and feedback is a great idea. Last month, when we posted our first ever "official" policies (a requirement of our insurance company), we opened the comments. There was a good conversation, and we'll certainly keep those comments in mind as our policies evolve. There is some great stuff in this thread too.
Your comment about us being curators is spot on, from my point-of-view. I was trained as a journalist and I've written for a zillion mainstream media outlets (and a zillion-and-one 'zines). When I participate in panels, present to journalism classes, or just chat with other journalists, I'm frequently asked if I consider blogging to be journalism. The only answer I have is, "Yes, if they're practicing journalism. I don't practice journalism on Boing Boing."
In journalism terms, my role at BB may be somewhat comparable to an editor. But in my own head, I'm a collector. Boing Boing is my online cabinet of curiosities where I put things that I think are interesting. Sometimes, I try to be a sensemaker, looking for patterns in the chaos. Mostly though, I just get off on the wonders that the world has to offer.
Interestingness is my only filter. And I'm always delighted (and a bit surprised) that so many people seem to share my interests. Decades ago, a reporter asked Timothy Leary (one of bOING bOING's patron saints) what he thinks folks should do after they "turn on." Tim said they should "find the others." Not to sound too sappy, but I feel fortunate that Boing Boing has become a place where we can all find each other.
For me, that's what Boing Boing is all about. I hope it stays that way.

"Of course this isn't a problem for most websites because they either tend to be 1) a single author blog in which case we can expect a reasonably consistent viewpoint or 2) a web magazine in which it's clear that there might be some overall theme or viewpoint, ultimately each article is by a different author and they are responsible for it's content."
I'm not sure why BB being in a blog format means that it's somehow different (generally speaking) from the specific characteristics of #2 that you describe above. Each of us has a byline on our posts.
Also, I'm really not convinced that we're hypocrites. I think you and I will just have to agree to disagree on that one.

TOM @464, Thanks. And I totally agree about the value of "constructive, reasoned, heartfelt on-topic comment (s)," even if the commenter doesn't agree with us. I think that was Xeni's goal when she made this post: to have a reasonable conversation about the bigger questions this situation has raised, without getting mired in the gossip, drama, and speculation. And you're right. We're trying to figure this stuff out together. We've been doing Boing Boing in one form or another for 20 (!) years and it's still evolving. Fortunately, we're into mutation. ; )

Funnily enough, I was thinking about something along those lines last night. Not just as a response to this particular situation, but as a way to keep this kind of "meta-conversation" with our community going. Anyway, more grist for the mill. Thanks for bringing it up!

Andrew Brandou: new paintings
July 3, 2008 1:47pm
@Tiki (#1), Yes, absolutely. Andrew is an absolute master of color. We have a very large painting he did hanging in our dining room. The whole piece is marvelous, but the colors really bring the characters and scene to life.

@Random832 (#1276), The unpublishing of the posts wasn't discussed among the group of us internally until a week ago.
That Violet Blue thing
July 2, 2008 10:19pm
Oh, also regarding my comment #1215, I vaguely remember deleting a quick post about something when I was unaware that another one of us was working on a longer or more informed post on the same subject. So I might have taken down my post as a courtesy and to "make way" for the more thorough post. I can't think of any specific instances of that but it did pop into my mind just now.
That Violet Blue thing
July 2, 2008 9:46pm
The only other posts that I personally know of that have been unpublished have been dupes, like when I post about something that, say, Mark blogged about two years (or two days) previously and I forgot about. I can't think of any others at all.

July 2, 2008 9:03pm
Xeni, thanks for bringing up the question about what to do when people want to delete their profiles and/or specific comments. Folks, we've been trying to figure out the right thing to do with regard to that long before this situation. I appreciate any good suggestions or pointers to best practices in that regard. In fact, I think we might want to raise that in a separate thread later on too.
That Violet Blue thing
July 2, 2008 6:20pm
@NelsonC (#1148), You're absolutely right. This is much to important to just whip out some random policy. We really want to think this through, individually and then as a group. Also, if you do have advice, please share. We're all ears. Thanks.
That Violet Blue thing

@Joel (#1108), Let's just let the conversation continue and maybe some new insights and observations will emerge. Or the thread will implode and catapult us all into another dimension where Yetis reign supreme.
Seriosuly though, this is a lot to parse and we're just trying to keep up. As I said earlier, the comments here have had a big impact on me and also how I think about Boing Boing and its place in the world. The voices we've been hearing, both critics and supporters, have raised a lot of questions that all of us at BB have to think about very seriously. I personally don't have answers yet. But I promise that as soon as we make sense of this whole thing, we'll share what we've learned. Thanks.

@ShawnStruck (#861), Thanks so much. Policies like those are very new to us and we're definitely learning *a ton* about how to write a good, honest, and fair policy, how to update them, what's legal, what insurance companies stand firm on, etc. There was a great discussion about our policies when we posted the first rev and we will *absolutely* take into account what the community posted there (and here!) as we continue to revise them.
That Violet Blue thing
July 2, 2008 9:18am
It wasn't a change from a previous policy about unpublishing. There wasn't one stated. In fact, we didn't really have any policies posted at all until a few weeks ago. So as our policies evolve, we'll make that known. When we commented on this matter, we linked to the policy with the additional wording. But we'll try to be even more specific and clearer in the future with regard to changes. Thanks!
That Violet Blue thing
July 2, 2008 8:43am
@Joel (#815), Totally. It's been really hard reading a lot of this, but I'm learning a lot about what BB represents to many people and also how much our community really cares about this site and are invested in it. I appreciate that. The support, criticism, and yes, even the outrage, didn't fall on deaf ears. And I too feel differently about some things than before.

July 1, 2008 3:59pm
@Alexreynolds (#496), I think Xeni removed that phrase because it sounded inflammatory and insulting in a way that she didn't intend.
Also, I ask that people please don't continue with the nasty names or post stupid, sophomoric insults. The moderators will do their best to remove or disemvowel those comments, whether they're about a Boing Boinger, Violet Blue, or anyone else.

@Thinkerer (#3), That does look like an interesting book. Thanks for the tip! At Institute for the Future, we try to distinguish between "problems" (that can be solved) and "dilemmas" (which have to be managed but can't be solved.) This notion definitely relates to the challenges of the intelligence community. More on that thought in this previous post.

Umbrella massacre in Tokyo
April 30, 2008 12:54pm

I'd suggest that people read the book, which won't be out until next month, before getting too up-in-arms and start calling the doctor, organizing protests, etc. I'm not saying "My Beautiful Mommy" is not creepy, but it's always best to read a book before, er, reviewing it.

@JUSTONEGUY (#10), actually you're quite mistaken. Game-Go didn't pay a dime for their banner ad. We think they make very cool stuff so we gave them a free banner. Editorial coverage on BB is not for sale. Ever.
Steve Martin on being funny

@Crunchbird, Thanks for that mini-review. I thought the Smithsonian article might be an excerpt, but I didn't see a reference to the book. Maybe it's in the print edition though.

@CAVALIER, Not sure what you mean? I linked directly to the YouTube video.
Marijuana vending machine

@PIXEL (#2), that's a fantastic idea. They could charge like $20 for a bag of Doritos and people would pay it.
Winning lotto ticket confiscated from drug peddler
January 23, 2008 3:58pm
@KLOKWERK (#36), Actually, I didn't get anything wrong. I said that he bought the ticket and was later busted for selling methadone. That's what happened. However, I can now see why my wording may have been confusing. I've added that he allegedly sold the drugs the previous week. Thanks!

@Lightfoote (#1), you just made my week. Thank you. I often think about Boing Boing like that too. We really appreciate you spending time here with us.
Gibson Robot Guitar
January 14, 2008 4:52pm
@Hexatron (#4), that's a cool thought. I've seen Sonic Youth in concert and Thurston Moore has a huge array of guitars lined up all tuned differently. I see that the robot guitar has quite a few tunings as presets but I'm not sure if it can store custom presets.

@Antinous, Of course, you're absolutely right. Fixed. Duh. I must be tired. Thanks. (Stepping away from the blog...)
BBtv Vlog: David Meets Artist Liz McGrath.

Glad you folks enjoyed the piece. I had a great time with Liz. She's really very sweet and so talented. I like that she has a great sense of humor about her work. @FuzzyWong, thanks for that info about Haw Par Villa. Looks to be quite an interesting place.
ETech 2008 conference schedule
January 8, 2008 1:40pm
@Jeff, yes, the multidisciplinarity of the agenda is definitely reflected in the audience too. In previous years, Cory has liveblogged his notes from the conference. Also, there are many other bloggers who do the same. Once the event starts, I'm sure the ETech site will link to the various blogs covering the proceedings.
Our universe as virtual reality
January 7, 2008 2:26pm
@JPHILBY, Of course you're right. I'm a big PKD fan. The folks I listed were in reference to their non-fiction, but then again, it's a blurry line. : )
And thanks to all for those movies, which I've never seen!

@Garaughty, at night those gardens are absolutely wonderful (and warm) in person. Hard to stop playing with the sand! Glad you liked the post!

ALXNDR @3, I haven't been yet, but I've heard it's really fantastic.
