If it had been in Montreal instead of Toronto, this entire video might have been filmed UNDERGROUND.

Anon #2 4:16 PM Tuesday, Jun 29, 2010 Reply

Wow...the full spectrum of everything wrong with our society all played out during one weekend in Toronto. Good thing the jackboots weren't around, or else he may have ended up corralled, beaten, pepper sprayed, and detained without cause...then again he's protesting for the status-quo...maybe they would recruit him?

I love videos of teenagers making fun of mentally challenged people! Oh wait, no...it actually makes me really sad.

Doug Watt #4 4:31 PM Tuesday, Jun 29, 2010 Reply

What was the store he wanted to go to, Cadillac something?

Mark Frauenfelder #5 4:31 PM Tuesday, Jun 29, 2010 Reply

He doesn't seem mentally challenged to me. In fact, he seems smart, but angry.

jansob #6 4:31 PM Tuesday, Jun 29, 2010 Reply

I love the idea that this obviously left-wing guy with his (pagan-peacenik?) "resistance" t-shirt is apoplectic because he can't get into the Consumer Cathedral to give more money to the corporations he probably rants about to his friends. And then tries to shut down a videotaper...such a brave warrior against the system!

The zombie guy next to him was doing the best commentary on the situation, but rant-man was to self-absorbed to notice...

Anon #7 4:33 PM Tuesday, Jun 29, 2010 Reply

That was actually a pretty good speech. That guy should totally run for office.

Cadillac Fairview is the corporation that owns and operates the Eaton Centre.

Anon #10 4:36 PM Tuesday, Jun 29, 2010 Reply

Have to agree with Mark on this one. Doesn't seem mentally challenged. Mentally disturbed? Perhaps.

dculberson replied to comment from Doug Watt #11 4:37 PM Tuesday, Jun 29, 2010 Reply

Cadillac Fairview, I think. The owners of the mall. Pretty clever answer to have on the ready.

@Tim, I'm not entirely sure this guy's mental challenges extend beyond being a self entitled prat. He's far too eloquent to be very "challenged."

The mall is owned by Cadillac-Fairview

Like the cameraman said it's private property, they can lock their doors to the public if they feel like it.
If it makes him so angry that they're not open he should use his powers as a consumer and shop elsewhere instead of throwing his toys out the pram.

fnc #14 4:38 PM Tuesday, Jun 29, 2010 Reply

That's just begging to be mixed into a song.

A very very annoying song.

I love the idea that a middle-aged shopper is kicking up a big fuss about the collateral economic damage of the G20. And you thought that the Black Bloc was only made up of bored teenagers.

Sagodjur #16 4:40 PM Tuesday, Jun 29, 2010 Reply

He should be thankful this is in Canada. If he was in the US, he'd have been tased at some point in the video.

Then again, if this was Britain, the cops would let the would-be customer riot while detaining the cameraman under the Terror Act.

Initially I thought he had to have some sort of autistic spectrum disorder, but towards the tail end it's clear he's just an asshole.

The cameraman was excellent. I gotta say, if I owned a mall... I wouldn't want that guy in there. Perhaps there's a nugget of truth there.

GeekMan #20 5:26 PM Tuesday, Jun 29, 2010 Reply

relawson replied to comment from Blaine #23 5:40 PM Tuesday, Jun 29, 2010 Reply

The cameraman has a hell of a lot more restraint than me. It looked like the crazy guy touched/smacked the camera, and that's exactly the point that I hit back ;)

don't get me wrong, you can do whatever the hell you want, but "your right to swing your arms stops at the end of my nose" so-to-speak.

what was with the people already inside? were those doors just locked by accident? I saw the mall cop moving the people from the bench inside, but why were they there?

The teenager kid was awesome, btw. Way to 1up the guy screaming at the door. At least he had more passion to press his body against the building. :)

chgoliz #24 5:51 PM Tuesday, Jun 29, 2010 Reply

My first thought, which of course could be totally off-base, is that there are protocols in which a store will close all doors and detain people until a child (or purse snatcher) is found.

It's probably just that the mall closed early that day and we're seeing the tail-end of customers who got into the mall before it officially closed but have not yet left.

It must be hard to be so persecuted in life.

Anon #25 5:54 PM Tuesday, Jun 29, 2010 Reply

FYI, the mall went into lockdown during the G20 shenanigans.

Whiskeyjack #26 5:55 PM Tuesday, Jun 29, 2010 Reply

This was taken on Saturday in Toronto during the G20 summit. The Eatons Centre had been open earlier in the day, but as the situation got worse, eventually they locked down the mall, which is why I imagine there were people sitting inside still.

Regulas #27 5:59 PM Tuesday, Jun 29, 2010 Reply

ROFL!!!

Of course all of the American readers/viewers are asking themselves, "What the h@#& is and 'eatons'?"

Why are you closed?!?

Might have something to do with not wanting to have their stuff smashed up by a bunch of parasitic-lay about-deadbeat-petty criminals, aka G20 protesters.

Regulas #28 6:04 PM Tuesday, Jun 29, 2010 Reply

Typo ~ an 'eatons'; sorry

Anon #29 6:15 PM Tuesday, Jun 29, 2010 Reply

Now I'm kind of wondering why they did lock the door. Did they know this guy was coming or something?

BookGuy #30 6:30 PM Tuesday, Jun 29, 2010 Reply

This might have been one of the very rare instances in which the use of a taser would be appropriate and justified.

This man probably has a personality disorder and is in the middle of an episode. Take it out of context and it looks like a 'typical consumer' frothing at the mouth to spend his money on crap. In reality, he probably needs some help.

Blaine - not to single you out but can you really rule out autism, bipolar disorder, etc. and simply label him an asshole by looking at a few minutes of video? If so, you're a psychiatric genius.

To me this illustrates more the problem that for every person who wants to express themselves, there's 5 people who just want to video someone having a bad day and upload it to the net for attention.

Face it, no one likes being filmed when they're upset. And no one likes a smug lookie-loo telling them "you're in a public place, I can do it if I want". We used to scorn the paparazzi for this very reason. Now instead of offering someone in distress assistance, we just film them. And show it to everyone.

Will we at some point allow taste and discretion to enter into this equation?

zorro869 #44 9:33 PM Tuesday, Jun 29, 2010 Reply

The Mall was closed because the mad scientist store had an accident and a small amount of Zombie Pox was released into the atmosphere of the mall.

Thank God our hero decides it's in his Bill of Rights as a human to shop at the fabulous mall. Now.

Psst. Buddy, It's not the Lincoln Memorial, it's a mall.

Ahh... I get it... You're not ready to go Anacharize until you get your Starbuck's on huh? I don't blame you.

But why are you hassling the camera guy?

Yes, you are a spectacle.

Yes he can film you.

...Better leave before a G20 cop rounds the corner, because you would have had 3 tazer darts in you by now.

zyodei #45 10:25 PM Tuesday, Jun 29, 2010 Reply

I think one thing should be said: the whole center of Toronto is in a ridiculous state of police violence, at a cost of $1B to the public purse, where all rights are suspended, while the most prolific and dangerous criminals in the world sit around and pow-wow.

Certainly, his reaction is irrational. But put into the broader context, of probably a day spent being pushed about, inconvenienced, and threatened, and maybe his reaction makes more sense.

Here are the full lyrics. I demand recreations of this event at malls across the world and in different languages and a hardcore song.

tell us why you're closed
tell us why you're closed
why why why
are you closed?
I want to go shopping in the eaton center
Why
are you lock - why are you closing your doors
Why
are you locking your doors to the public
why
Tell us the reason
why
why
tell us the reason
tell us the reason why
why are you putting people through this
why
why
why are you putting us through this
who gave you the right
who gave you the right
by what right do you
exclude the population
why
who are you
how dare you do this to us
we
are the toronto public
we
want to SHOP
we
want to get into the eaton center
it
is a public place
it
says it's open till seven oclock
why are you closed why
why
tell us why
tell us why
doesn't anyone else care
it's just a spectacle to you
it's just a spectacle to you
it's just funny
ha ha ha ha
let the police cut off my balls
i don't mind 'cause it's the cops
and they're always right
right?
you want to go shopping
you don't give a shit do you
not really
then why don't you go fuck off with your camera
and stop stop fi-
I'm saying I'm not giving you permission to film me
Alright, you don't have permission
No no it's closed
Oh really you're going to explain it to me
Well tell me why it's closed
Oh Cadillac Fairview doesn't want me in
That's why they closed the whole place?
Are you nuts? Are you crazy?
I just walked over here for Christ's sake.

I get the feeling that this man woke up that morning and felt the need to protest about something, anything, just as long as he could be adequately angry about it. Maybe he just wasn't feeling any of the other popular topics of protest currently making the rounds at the summit. Some days, you just gotta protest somethin'.

...and on my 500th rewatching of this, it looks like, right in the beginning, there's a woman on the inside who is gesturing to a person on the outside, and my interpretation is that there are other doors to the mall that are open, but these particular doors just happen to be locked.

I could be wrong, but if this guy figured that out, I'm betting he would feel like a tremendous jackass.
