My first thought, which of course could be totally off-base, is that there are protocols in which a store will close all doors and detain people until a child (or purse snatcher) is found.

It's probably just that the mall closed early that day and we're seeing the tail-end of customers who got into the mall before it officially closed but have not yet left.

FYI, the mall went into lockdown during the G20 shenanigans.

This was taken on Saturday in Toronto during the G20 summit. The Eatons Centre had been open earlier in the day, but as the situation got worse, eventually they locked down the mall, which is why I imagine there were people sitting inside still.

To me this illustrates more the problem that for every person who wants to express themselves, there's 5 people who just want to video someone having a bad day and upload it to the net for attention.

Face it, no one likes being filmed when they're upset. And no one likes a smug lookie-loo telling them "you're in a public place, I can do it if I want". We used to scorn the paparazzi for this very reason. Now instead of offering someone in distress assistance, we just film them. And show it to everyone.

...and on my 500th rewatching of this, it looks like, right in the beginning, there's a woman on the inside who is gesturing to a person on the outside, and my interpretation is that there are other doors to the mall that are open, but these particular doors just happen to be locked.

I could be wrong, but if this guy figured that out, I'm betting he would feel like a tremendous jackass.
