Penny Arcade TV

Penny Arcade has a video channel. Watching the lads is interesting, especially the mini-documentary, a super intro to their play-work.

I'm a big PA fan and am excited about this new format and media on the site. Being on the Internet, however, I of course have a gripe. It's this:

I loved the podcasts ("Downloadable Content", I believe, still available on iTunes). Love love loved them. They were just recordings of their writing process - turn on the mics, let the "tape" roll, and record their witty banter. While they lasted, those 20 - 60 minute podcasts were my favorite thing about the site, honestly. When they became less regular and finally stopped altogether, I felt almost as bad as I did when I watched the last episode of The Wire.

So, these PA-TV shows (especially "The 4th Panel") are supposed to replace the podcast. That's fine, except that they don't. They're heavily edited, and they don't capture the witticism that I came to enjoy so much very well at all.

I still love PA, and I realize that they're of course welcome to make decisions about their content based on more than what I want. I still miss those podcasts, though ...

You should tell them that on their site.

It wouldn't have any effect, they have a habit of ignoring or mocking feedback. Either the volume of congratulations they receive drowns everything out, or they just don't care. I can't see their inbox so it's all just a guess.

What I can see is that they live in their own private bubble, immune to what's happening in the world until it appears on a gaming news site. I don't fault them for that, it's clear that it works.. they're successful by any definition of the word, and are consistently funny.

But it does mean that trying to change them is about as effective as whining in a boingboing comment. ;)

I see them more as having learned to trust their own instincts and make decisions based on their own opinions and input from close confidants (Robert Khoo, maybe, but me, not so much). I don’t think they’re rude or insular or anything, but who knows. Like you, I can’t see their inbox. I have passed on this feedback without expectation of reply, but I think it makes for an interesting discussion here ..?

I for one welcome our new video overlords.

But seriously, I think the video thing is a good idea. It's a good way to soften their image a bit. Every Penny Arcade strip is an inside joke of some sort, and for me part of the fun is decoding the message they are trying to send (not always easy, because sometimes there ISN'T one).

Mike and Jerry have stumbled into a very interesting arrangement of media that allows them to sell their opinions and talents wholesale to people who want to hear it. They have cornered the market of video game pundit; something equivalent competitors in print are always trying and failing to do.

In short, I like it, it makes Penny Arcade that much more fun.

PA responds to certain types of feedback, such as requests for certain pieces of merchandise or to overall trends contained in the deluge of emails that they receive unsolicited. If you read through the comments in their published comic collections, they sometimes mention the fans' reception to changes in the artwork or to popular/unpopular/shit-stirring strips.

All that you can do is submit your opinion, and chances are that if enough people share your opinion then they are likely to respond to it in a positive manner.

Are you going to mock or ignore my feedback, and just continue to live in your private, albeit successful, bubble? Do you even care?

You know I have all of the podcasts in my itunes, untouched. Never listened to 'em, though based on how much I

I have to admit, though, I was one of the horde that e-mailed them to encourage PA TV. Sorry for drowning out your criticism =P

It's kinda fun to watch them, but in some ways I feel it kills the mystique of who they are.

Also I cannot stop fixating on those freaky teeth.

Tesco store bans grocery-shopping in pyjamas

A Welsh outlet of Tesco, the UK mega-grocer, has instituted a no-pyjamas policy for its shoppers.
