I was going to pooh-pooh the pirate concerns, but then ... they have taken in millions upon millions of dollars in ransom money. It's not a HUGE stretch to imagine they've spent at least a little but of that on technology.
Exactly, they're often carrying sat phones, so someone on shore probably has been giving guidance. Combine that with GPS and it easily explains some of the intercepts.

Dig around in MarineTraffic: they offer a Google Earth kml that will allow you to look at all of the ships with Google Earth. Really cool!
For San Francisco Bay, you can also watch the ships sail in through the Golden Gate, and watch the ship on the web cam at http://www.hd-sf.com. (see their time lapse video of ships too!).
