Video about Guantánamo detainees released without charge

The ACLU produced this video about men who were held at Guantánamo for years without charge then, after being tasered, suffocated, raped, punched, blinded, and spat upon, were released without charge. (Via The Agitator)

And that's why I give money to the ACLU.

USA!! USA !!! USA!!!

Man... if this guys wasn't a terrorist before I'm sure he's looking in to it now. Torture doesn't work and is NEVER right.

Stuff like this makes me embarrassed to be an American. I'm glad that they realize it's not our country as a whole, but a select few that have a perverted sense of justice and authority.

Released... without charge.

Oops?

My last comment was meant to be full of biting sarcasm, but after watching the video, I realize what a nothing comment it is. This is stuff straight out of a Solzhenitsyn novel. I pay taxes for this? I PAYED for this? Even though I protested it from the beginning, I'm ashamed that I contributed to it however indirectly. The irony of a man escaping Saddam's brutality only to be embraced by the brutality of this country- the country that's supposed to be an aberration as the most humanist and idealistic country on earth. (Or so our national myth tells us.)

The ACLU is part of what's left of the American conscience, but more than that, it represents those Americans who are not simply concerned with their own souls and their own culpability but those who empathize with the experiences of others. It's not enough to simply be ashamed and fear for yourself as a member of a supposedly conscientious granfalloon, because that's not compassion, but a deeper selfishness. You have to really and truly respect other people enough to understand that you are them as much as they are you, that there is no distinct line dividing their groups from yours and that what pains them should injure you. There is no "other".

I am a Jew. Hath not a Jew eyes? Hath not a Jew hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions; fed with the same food, hurt with the same weapons, subject to the same diseases, healed by the same means, warmed and cooled by the same winter and summer as a Christian is? If you prick us do we not bleed? If you tickle us do we not laugh? If you poison us do we not die? And if you wrong us shall we not revenge? If we are like you in the rest, we will resemble you in that. If a Jew wrong a Christian, what is his humility? Revenge. If a Christian wrong a Jew, what should his sufferance be by Christian example? Why, revenge. The villainy you teach me I will execute, and it shall go hard but I will better the instruction. -William Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice Act III Scene I. [Emphasis added]

This is terrible. Now these terrorists will go back to the battlefield and engage in killing Americans and others. That's what the last 61 did and you certainly expect these to do likewise. When will the Real American people rise up and tell Mr. Obama we've had enough of his Marxist agenda and want safety above all else?

If you are Sean Hannity, go to hell and die please. If you are not Sean Hannity and this was or was not sarcasm see above.

"First people against the wall when the revolution came."

Not to worry....I seriously doubt that Sean Hannity knows how to use the internets.

I'm glad that they realize it's not our country as a whole, but a select few that have a perverted sense of justice and authority.

That might be giving us too much credit. The vast majority of Americans supported the politicians and the policies that made Guantanamo possible while willfully ignoring the consequences. We might not have been the ones doing the actual torture, but when we collectively decided it was OK to suspend Habeus Corpus and ignore the Geneva Conventions this became the inevitable result.

We need to hold our leaders accountable, and we need to hold ourselves accountable.

As a person who spent 9 years in the Army Reserve and as an American citizen, this makes me embarrassed of my country. Aren't we above this? How could anyone could think this is "right" to do?

I know people will say "well the CIA, etc was just going off what country X told them about this person" Bullshit. Your job is to investigate people before locking them up - do some research first. You ever think that a poor policeman may accuse somebody of a crime just to get a payoff/bonus from thier local government or from the CIA?

Stop this now...

Sure, we imprison, torture, beat, rape and mutilate for no damn reason, but have you heard about the totalitarian nightmare that public option health insurance will create?

"Historic responsibility has to make up for the want of legal responsibility. Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men, even when they exercise influence and not authority: still more when you superadd the tendency or certainty of corruption by full authority. There is no worse heresy than the fact that the office sanctifies the holder of it."
- John Dalberg-Acton, April 1877

I agree completely. And I feel ashamed. What was done in our names is unconscionable.

Why, exactly, does the United States not owe these people and all the others released without charge an enormous amount of money, and at the very least a public apology and some acknowledgment of what they endured for no reason?
