Transgender papaya

Transgender papaya: scientists change the sex of a tropical fruit to help farmers. With papaya, there are three options: male, female, "intersexed." The latter taste best, but don't breed so well. (via oxbloodruffin)

That's interesting. Along similar lines, there's a long-standing old wives tale that you can sex eggplants by looking at them, and that "female" eggplants are seedier and more bitter than "male" eggplants.

This never made any sense to me because of course all eggplants are fruits, and so come from the female parts of the eggplant plant. But I wonder if the myth came from cases like this.

eggplants are berries, and there are female and male eggplants. watch some good eats man!

The latter taste best, but don't breed so well.

Holds true for the human variety, too.

the latter taste best! of course they do...

I don't know any hermaphrodites to test that out with!

@Anonymous: Being a berry doesn't matter. Eggplants can self-pollinate, just like tomatoes and peppers. Therefore, each eggplant plant contains both male and female parts. Since every eggplant comes from a seed, that means each seed is hermaphrodite. If all the seeds are hermaphrodite, one could hardly call the fruit that contains the seeds "male" or female."

I always celebrate when a new Terry Pratchett novel hits the stands -- doubly so now that health problems are slowing him down from his normal superhuman output to a merely impressive one. But I confess I was a little less excited to learn that the newest Pratchett Discworld book, Unseen Academica... More.

Demi claims missing hipflesh is for real. But $5,000 says it's Moore photoshopping.

Photographer Anthony Citrano recently pointed us to a possible Photoshop Disaster on the cover of W magazine's December issue, in which Demi Moore (aka @mrskutcher) appeared to be missing a chunk of flesh from her hip. This reminded me of the Ralph Lauren debacle. Many blogs and news sites p... More.
