Guido Núñez-Mujica, a 26-year-old Boing Boing reader in Venezuela who is an avid gamer, writes in with this extensive personal observation piece about a new law that widely criminalizes video games in the South American country. As you read the piece, please also bear in mind that publishing this s... More.
You can find a lot of crap on YouTube, but you know what? You can find gems like this, too. I don't know much about the origin of this video, but it's one in a series of three ten-minute chunks on YouTube -- rare color footage of Tibetan tantric masters meditating, in retreat. Looks a few dec... More.
Sometimes, from certain places, the light from the sun can briefly appear green. NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day explains,
Just as the setting Sun disappears completely from view, a last glimmer appears startlingly green. The effect is typically visible only from locations with a low, distan... More.
My last few trips to Canada, I've been puzzled by difficult-to-follow advocacy ads in which the broadcasters and the cable/sat operators have fought each other tooth and nail, begging Canadians to take side in a dispute over -- well, that's the problem. What was it over?

This Cold War site and box set ($220) made a big splash a few years ago.
Wish their audio clips weren't in RealAudio (RealAudio?!!)
There's still a large air raid siren enclosement near my parent's house.
Used to go off like clockwork every Thursday at 10:00 am
right up into the late 1970s. Must've worked because we
never had no Commies in our neighborhood!
Comedy is not funny.
George was a great friend who recently passed away. He started as a folk singer but built his career in comedy. More of his singing here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXV52ML50WY and here http://denverdirect.blogspot.com/2009/06/aim-for-middle-my-good-friend-george.html
Anyone have any leads on fonts similar to those used in the title card? Especially the one used for the "Teenage Fallout Queen" text.
Not Cold War pop, but my favorite post-nuclear-apocalypse-themed tune is Increased Chances from the awesome game Full Throttle: http://www.toshistation.com/images/IncreasedChances.mp3
The "Teenage Fallout" lettering looks hand-drawn (look at how the "L"s are stacked)
There are plenty of similar-looking standard fonts out there.
You'll have to shop and compare yourself.
The whole title card looks pasted together by hand.
Remember, this was 1964. Photoshop would not arrive
until at least 1971
Try some of the free font sites on the I-Net, of which there are a jillion. Good luck!
Look for The Atomic Cafe movie and soundtrack for some great cold war songs
Mark & SupermanUF, I found a site offering free typographer-sourced font identification and opened this as a case: http://new.myfonts.com/WhatTheFont/forum/case/237665/
That video was one of the Extras on the Criterion laserdisc of _Dr. Strangelove_.
I've actually seen this before . . . via projection from an original 16mm Scopitone reel! It was part of a Scopitone presentation given at the Clinton Street Theater in Portland.
Scopitone = coin-operated rear-projection music "video" system.
It took me like three or four full seconds to realize this was a joke. But once my sloth-like brain caught on, I liked it. Sorry to hear George isn't with us anymore, but I hope he enjoyed some success in his time. The song was funny without resorting to vulgarity and mindlessness, which is always a big plus in my book.
If you're looking for real, no-joke Cold War rock, check out www.conelrad.com and search for their "Atomic Platters" box set. I admit there's a weird part of me that really loves all that kind of stuff, and the Atomic Platters tracklist is worth a listen, if you're the same way.
