Bus-shelter made out of a bus

Here's a sweet bus-shelter made out of a bus -- the irony is that the bus that stops here is made out of a bus-shelter.

Dumping auto waste or old auto parts is one of the major problems for most nations across the world. Resurrecting old school buses, sculptor and designer Christopher Fennell has devised a bus shelter that not only looks unique but also helps in reducing the huge piles of auto waste. Made of selective parts and pieces from three iconic school buses, from the years '62, '72 and '77, and old city line seats, the yellow bus shelter is a unique way to attract people toward recycling and adopting a green lifestyle. Check out the video after the jump.

I hope he reused more of the buses than that in total! After all, reusing and recycling works best when you use most of the object! Looks OK, but both my aesthetic and my 'green eye' would have liked it better made from 1 bus!

Yay! Athens GA! I pass this stop almost every day. Good to see it getting some love.

Athens, GA!

it's very cool, very smart, not the slightest bit ironic.

Awesome! I want them in my city!!

There are a whole lot of different arty designs around town, including cool big purple one roughly across the street from this one. Some of them are pretty non-functional, though (ahem, Alps Rd Kroger, lookin' at you) and clearly designed by somebody who has never waited for a bus before.

Hah, I recognized that bus stop immediately!

I need to get some pictures of it the next time I'm on that side of town. I keep meaning to, but never actually get around to it. It's definitely iconic.

This is a cool idea on many levels so I'm not trying to be negative here but what will happen in 25 years when the bus stop has deteriorated to the point of needing to be replaced? Will the city recycle it again, or will it get dumped unceremoniously as landfill? Recyling only works when it happens continuously. As soon as you break the chain, you're just practicing deferred littering.

Hahaha, I like how most of the comments are from fellow Athenians. If I remember correctly, the bus shelters were part of some kind of design competition a few years ago. I think the purple one on Baxter and the other one on Alps were also part of the competition. Those are the only ones I ever notice? Are there more around town?

Anon#1, kmoser- art doesn't necessarily need to be congruent with sustainability- what if the buses were just left to rot in the junkyard indefinitely? In the meantime, something is being done with garbage that is fun and enriching, and will hopefully encourage people to use public transit. Plus, if a bus stop lasts 25 years, then hell yeah! Athens is pretty progressive, so I doubt it will simply be tossed on the junkpile.

by the same token, reusing and recycling work worst when you use none of the object.

Athens. See this everyday. It's pretty cool actually. Sad part is it's in front of a McDonald's and Applebee's.simms

Well, dude, it just wouldn't fit in front of the Grit, now would it?

I had no idea there were so many Athenians reading BoingBoing.

I believe there's another interesting one somewhere on Atlanta Highway in front of the Target, or am I misremembering?
