Here's a mid-1980s CBC News scare-story about Dungeons and Dragons driving kids to suicide featuring (at 2:49 onwards) me and my classmates (the video is dated 1985, but I'm pretty sure this couldn't have been later than my graduation from Junior High in 1984). Good things to know when the learning curve (and one's hair) is flammable.
My wife just said the video is very Bill Viola. True, that.
With proper technique and understanding there is no problem or danger with hair - including full beards and moustaches. of course, it is generally advisable that people starting off should shave, trim, or otherwise protect their locks. Being clean shaven also allows for cool scalp and facial flame retentions.
I hope that the people in the video (and others) don't just appreciate the beauty of the footage but also use it as a tool for refining technique and understanding the process. For instance, beyond going for a specific type of blast there is little to be gained by spraying directly into the torch head - igniting the fluid through the flame above the head often produces better and more importantly safer results.
Lizardman (bald): 20 years experience
glad to see beloved vancouver friends featured on boingboing.
