Grown-Ups are Dumb! (No Offense) -- fun book by a 12-year-old cartoonist

How cool is it that a 12-year-old cartoonist would dedicate her fun new book of cartoons to old-school masters like Sergio Aragones and John Stanley? (I imagine her father, underground cartoonist and publisher Denis Kitchen, gave her access to tons of excellent comics, which inspired her to become a cartoonist herself.)

Alexa Kitchen's good taste in cartoonists shines in Grown-Ups are Dumb! (No Offense), an anthology of light-hearted comic strips that will appeal to kids in elementary and junior high school. The great thing about her work is that it really is the product of a kid. Her sense of humor and perspective on school, friends, siblings, and families is very much like my own two daughters'. I know they'll enjoy her book (she has one previous book: Drawing Comics is Easy! (Except When It's Hard))

The book is called Grown-Ups (plural) are dumb. You manage to get it wrong multiple times in this post, which kinda makes you look dumb. No offense.

How talented! Always makes you feel good to see this kind of thing!

She's not selling it to me. In fact I'm not really sure what "it" is. I can't really see anything to cause me to part with my hard earned money in this youtubeism.
I get that she draws stuff (she may even be pretty good at drawing stuff) but there's far too much "precocious scamp" and far too little "what I draw" in this vid.

I am, however, an adult and I am, therefore, dumb.

The audio on the clip is fantastic ! Better produced than many big name movie studios! Adds credibility and interest to Alexa's talent. Bravo to all involved.

I probably wouldn't buy this book either, but guess what Fsck and Mojave - we are probably not the target audience... Personally, I commend Alexa on publishing her second book by 12. Even if it make me feel really old.

bboyneko,
OK then, step up. Let's see the great art from the book that you published when you were 12...

bboyneko,

Ripping a twelve year old a new asshole in your first BB comment: priceless.

Lets not give her too much credit people, I'm sure her parents did most of the work.

Own comic published by the age of 12?

Heloooo Art School.

Actually... I know who she is, and the work is all hers.

However, her father is Denis Kitchen, of Kitchen Sink Press fame.

wow bitter old people with no talent ripping on a 12-year old with huge talent who is still growing up. Grown-ups really are dumb. I'm 42 and in my dreams I wish I could draw as good as she does. It's inspiring to see young people actually do something with their time other than rot their brains on television, the internet, video games, etc.

And we're all sure your mommy wrote your comment for you, Billistic.

While this 12 year old was centrally involved in the creation of the book, I'll assume she did not edit and produce this commercial. So I want to be clear that I'm not criticizing a 12 year-old, when I say this video annoyed me. It exemplifies the thing where people try to sell art on the basis of the story of the person who created the art, rather than the story contained within the art itself.

I watch this thing, and other than showing examples of her drawings, it gives me no idea as to the contents of this book. Is it a comic book? Is it a story, or a bunch of single-page commentary? Who will like this book? What is the subject matter? Etc.

bboyneko:

If you're going to criticize a talented 12 year old, USE VOWELS.

Wow...I'm 25 and I haven't done as much as this "little" girl...now I feel old AND worthless. :(

Just kidding. Seriously though, this is awesome--I think my favorite part of the strips I saw on Amazon is that they very obviously *don't* appeal to grown-ups. A comic book from a 12 year old that was designed to appeal to me would just depress me--it's refreshing to see a 12 year old with 12 year old problems and viewpoints. (Although I think maybe she was 10 when she started the strips? *shrug* I might have read that wrong.)

damn, boingers can be mean. reminds me of what maynard keanen (sp?) said about tool fans; something to the effect of, "most of our fans are artists themselves, so they tend to be more empathetic and understanding." i always thought that was interesting.

props, girl.
