In memoriam: Amy Farris - fiddler, singer, roots music performer.

Fiddler, composer, singer, music teacher and lovely human being Amy Farris has passed away. I first learned of her work in the context of performances in various lineups with former members of the great punk band X, and their country offshoot band The Knitters: namely Exene Cervenka, and with Dave Alvin, with whom Ms. Farris played in the video clip embedded above (Dave Alvin & Guilty Women / "Abilene"). The Texas native died in Los Angeles on Wednesday of an apparent suicide. More at the LA Times.

I'm really surprised I've never really heard of her before now, considering how much I'm into '70s/'80s post-punk and New Wave. DAMMIT! Why do I always discover the good ones too late?! At least Gary Numan's still alive....

rest in peace Amy, I was so looking forward to seeing her play tomorrow at Hardly Strictly. Isn't life a fucking tragedy?

Oh no! Sad news indeed.

I was friends with Amy during my college days in Austin. She was incredibly sweet and kind and a wonderful human being. This is really sad.

Shit. I just realized I'm friends with her brother. This sucks.

I saw Amy here in Vancouver with Kelly Willis and in Seattle, HSB with Dave Alvin, told her once how much I enjoyed her playing...she was so nice to an ordinary fan...so sad

Saw Amy at Strawberry and was very impressed. I was looking forward to seeing her at Hardly Strictly, but Laurie Lewis dedicated a song to her and I knew I would not be seeing her. So very sad

I just found out yesterday that we lost Amy Farris. I'm shocked and stunned and very sad. She was so talented and beautiful. I loved her enthusiasm and grace and down-to-earth presence.
Rest In Peace, Dear Amy.
