French burlesque film: The Dancing Pig

Le Cochon danseur is a delightful French burlesque film from 1907. (Thanks, Mike Love!)

From 2:06 on... It scared the crap out of me. One of the freakiest faces I have ever seen.

The end bit at 2:07 where they show off the puppetry is absolutely horrifying.

That close up of the pig's teeth and tongue at the end is incredible.

A friend of mine used the pig teeth and tongue bit for an profile pic for quite awhile. It never stopped being disturbing.

That's a good idea, Uncle Max. I have a new IM icon!

I wish it had subtitles.

Ah, burlesque. It's sad how many people I've met that think the term is synonymous with striptease. You can have a burlesque without stripping, but you can't have one without comedy.

@6

What do you mean? The pig stripped...

I'm thinking that pig costume is just too good for 1907.

creepy though it may be, it's nice to see some proper, skit-based burlesque instead of the standard stripper-fare around nowadays. even an alarming "Meet the Feebles" callback holds more charm than the last burlesque show i attended -

Having worked in the trade for years I must say that is an extraordinary costume for the time period.

Makes you wish we had a Georges Melies version of Where The Wild Things Are.

I can't place the song but I've heard it before. Anyone?

We actually watched this short at USC film school as part of a lesson on "Cinema of Attractions," which is the concept that in the very earliest days of film history the medium was not used to tell stories but rather to show things to audiences that they had not previously seen or would get an opportunity to see. This is why you get a lot of gesturing to the camera, stage-like film demonstrations, etc.

What's really interesting is that in the last few years the idea of cinema of attractions has really taken off in modern filmmaking, a lot of which is more about showing things you could not otherwise see (like CGI stuff) than storytelling.

That's an awesome fursuit for 100 years ago.

Costume? What costume? That thing is clearly one of Cthulhu's relatives. I think it's referred to in the Book of Eibon as that which dances poorly. A more modern avatar is a certain purple dinosaur.

It reminded me of the Muppet's Swine Lake with Rudolph Nureyev and Miss Piggy in a hilarious pas de deux. (It's on Youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_kSTtjplkM).

I'm not surprised there's been a return to the "cinema of attractions". Early movies were limited by a five minute reel, just as Youtube uploads are. It took some time before the three reelers and longer productions got serious about story telling.

That pig has rhythm.

Beautiful. I agree, the last 30 seconds or so are magnificent.

The costume was pretty darn nice too. The top hat.

@12 the music's improvised especially for the piece. The pianist may be drawing from music contemporary to the film, or he could just be riffing.

There is another version of this film with the pig in a dress, but that, oddly enough, isn't so widely available outside closed film archives.

This clip has however been taken from the second part of the Retour De Flamme series put out by Lobster films. It costs a fortune to find, restore and preserve films like these, so if you like this do check out the RdF series, or the Americanised 'Saved From the Flames' boxset.

This is Barney the Dinosaur's ancestor!

Exceptional accompaniment - kudos to the pianist!

I felt really really sorry for that pig when the woman pulled off his clothes. He just seemed so humiliated and vulnerable! Poor pig.
