Goldwag: Some thoughts about 9/11 Truth
Guestblogger Arthur Goldwag is the author of "Cults, Conspiracies, and Secret Societies: The Straight Scoop on Freemasons, The Illuminati, Skull and Bones, Black Helicopters, The New World Order, and many, many more" and other books. 9/11 -- the sheer shock of it, the deaths, the sense of violation... Inebriated woman falls in front of oncoming train
A woman who appears to have been inebriated fell onto the tracks in a Boston subway as a train was rushing towards her. People on the platform frantically waved at the train, which stopped in the nick of time.... More.
Slow loris: possibly cutest animal ever
This is surely one of the most adorable animal YouTubes in the history of all internets. (via @maggiekb1 via this blog).... More.
Yves Béhar's seven-hour vibrator
Yves Béhar (who is in an epic struggle with Marc Newson to claim the title of "sexiest industrial designer alive") designed this vibrator. It looks like a Miyazaki cartoon creature. The Form 2 takes a two-pronged approach to the vibrator, giving its user what they're calling "Sensation in Stereo.... More.
MJ's funeral cost a mil
Michael Jackson's funeral cost one million dollars. His final outfit cost $35,000, and the flowers cost $16,000. Lord. Obviously I'm no MJ anyhow, but when I die, if there's a mil lying around? Feel free to bury me in nekkid dirt and use the rest to feed pie to starving kids.... More.

At first I was like "this is pretty cool, very 'augmented reality'" and then I saw the real-time LOL cat, and I was like "LOL! This is bestest use of technology evar!"
Managing all the info flying off augmented reality propositions is gonna be a chunky part of what librarians do in thirty years.
This isn't AR. It's a motion graphics / compositing test for a new After Effects plugin called Particular 2.
And it's 'visual effects,' not 'special effects,' thankyouverymuch.
Is that a frog shooting multicoloured sperm from its left eye?
Also, it keeps the illusions very well aligned with reality. In every other AR video I've seen, the augmented bits seem to shake slightly less than the camera, or slightly after it, or something like that. I'm guessing this can't be done in real-time.
the cloud looks like a baby LOST monster.
That's very impressive motion tracking for a hand held camera. Cool find.
Uh, fellow commenters, I don't think this is augmented reality. These are just special effects, it even says so right in the title.
What tool(s)? I want to learn to do this!
Ben, as others pointed out, this is not AR, but match-moving. So no realtime use, as of yet :)
@#9 Anon:
It is most likely a 3D particle system plugin, used in conjunction with some very kick-ass motion tracking. There's a variety of software tools that do each of these things, although I suspect that some of the motion tracking was tweaked by hand.
I believe the camera was tracked with PF Track and all of the effects were done with Trapcode's Particular 2. Actually its a demo of P2's new features that came out right when the very popular plugin was updated.
Lol, Ark, my match-moving wikipedia link ended up in your post. :D
@9: Very neat, but at $399 plus needing After Effects, it's too expensive for me. For something fun and far less expensive, Magnet from Creaceed (http://creaceed.com/magnet/) is only $39. Stand alone app to track objects in QuickTime movies and add effects/objects that track size/orientation, etc. Blur a face and have it track the person.
Mac only. I'm not associated with Creaceed, I'm just a fan.
399$ too expensive?
Don't even think of looking up how much AutoDesk's Flame or Inferno cost. You'll have a heart attack.
Nose,
I snatched it right out of the æther :)
AFAIC, the beast app for doing this kind of match-moving, is Boujou.

To be clear, the demos above are really to show something similar to the OP. Boujou is used in lots of Mega Budget features.
Ark, thanks for the Boujou links! Although that's a little out of the price range for the home hobbyist, alas.
Apparently there used to be a free (open source?) application called Icarus, but it doesn't look like it works too well, and it seems like it hasn't been active for a while.
What this guy's using, PFHoe, is a lot cheaper, and seems to do a great job.
Yep, his solution seems well up to the task - it's very impressive work. I wonder if his talent is what makes it so, or is it actually that decent a set up. Boujou is (almost) click and go. I've worked with other apps that took a lot more work to get a result.
Ok so iMovie 09 has the ability to stabilize the video, and it does this by examining the whole video, I'm betting they'll be out with something similar to this, lot's of simple 3d effects, in the inevitable iLife '10 or '11.
That is cool. Now check this out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3cYjgR8ZMw
