Here's a scene from American Casino, a new documentary about the subprime lending scandal and the resulting $12 trillion Wall Street bailout. Another consequence of the meltdown -- the swimming pools of foreclosed homes have become mosquito breeding grounds.

Photographer Julia Baum spent four years photographing suburban tract comes in Sta Clara, CA. The houses were all built in the 1950s to look identical, but over the years, their owners have modified them in a very pleasing, very vernacular way to personalize them.

We had to dislodge a paper wasp colony from under a tree branch. It fell into the water and soon the parental figures disbanded. Later, we fished the comb-like nest out again and found a variety of larva in various stages of development. Wouldn't you know it, some of the little larva were still wriggling! Later on a raccoon or owl must have got to it, because it was reduced to papery scraps in one or two days. I wonder if a few managed to mature, though, because every now and then a menacing wasp buzzes by, abdomen twitching, hissing, "you. killed. my. family."
I once heard somewhere that the best honey in the world comes from hives founds in the green hills of eastern Saudi Arabia (something to do with the wild flowers thereabouts); and that there is never enough supply for export - or for even domestic demand: that what there is of it all gets bought up by the wealthier Saudis.
