The Secret of Liquid Smoke
The secret: It's not the creepy chemical additive you thought. The topic was BBQ and I was shocked (Shocked!) to hear Lynne* and her guest recommend liquid... More.

Her smile is the icing on the cake!
Beautiful! Great job editing, that synced beautifully!
A lovely version that reminds me of Petra Haden's, which you can download here:
http://petrahadenmusic.com/sounds.html
Wait.. not Mark.. but..?
Oh, never mind ♫
Cute, but a bit pitchy.
@WIRTES, Thanks for that link! I dig Petra Haden. Learned of her from her work with Greg Dulli's Twilight Singers.
That is really bad singing.... but, I guess a hottie with a uke gets airtime, eh?
her more recent songs are better in my opinion:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REL5R-Ls3oU
Really?,
The girl is cute, but.. she can't sing.
This is hardly 'really bad singing'. She may not be staring in a broadway musical in the near future, but few of us are. Why must we be so critical, simply to be be so?
I agree with Ulmedas. I've been following Julia's videos on youtube for some time now and frankly, I think she has a beautiful voice. She's not using protools here. This is obviously all recorded and edited on her laptop in a dormroom or something. Why just criticize for the sake of it.
Not everyone has perfect pitch, and she's pretty damn close. There is so much creativity and talent in what she does in her videos. Even with it's imperfections, she has created something here and it is beautiful and wonderful just as it is.
She is adding to the human experience while your criticism for it's own sake merely adds to the amount of negativity out there. Why not encourage people to try and create something beautiful?
at 1;27 I want to kiss her because she is everything a girlfriend is suppose to be. That is, your best-friend. The smile to her soul.
..never heard of her before but she's really great!
her original songs sound like a female version Dashboard (Confessional, aka Chris Carrabba) which is a good thing
She is currently working on a new studio album which is going to be sweet!
Might be neat if she could sing. At this point, it sounds like a variation of one of those dog-bark songs, like this.
Cutesy wootsy doesn't equal quality, you fat, horny commenters.
Fun to hear? Yes, once or twice. Good? No.
Kind of a reach on this one. Sorry, but The Langley School of Music version will always be the best version of this song.
I've been a fan of her's for about a year now, and saw her give a great live show at a charity event at my school.
If you liked the video, or are just curious, I'd definitely suggest looking up some more of her videos and/or subscribing. She's opened for and performed with Ben Folds, if you're looking for a better known testimonial.
this is the first time,
the comment section on youtube
has surpassed
boingboing's.
julia, thankyou.
This is a really powerful demonstration of the way that technology has concentrated many hundreds of thousands dollars worth of equipment into something anyone with a bit of talent and a dream can afford.
Good luck to her.
Well, I watched four or five of her other videos, all better than this one. Her voice cracks at times but she gets so many things right and she is quite creative. Anyone who ever sang knows that it would be a very simple matter to fix her voice; it is impossible to give her what she's already invented for herself.
The negative criticism from people who can't even find a handle for themselves that is worth sh*t puts the cherry on the sundae. :D
To the haters, you post a video of YOU singing, then let us tell you how good you are (but, if you're dissing, you probably aren't, so sod off).
Also I know Julia and this is from two years ago, what gives?
So, it's official. If you're a cute girl, you have to play ukele.
Her cover of "Flagpole Sitta" is my favorite.
I much prefer Molly Lewis (sweetafton23) as my youtube ukulele girl of choice. Her originals make me melt.
It's our beloved Julia... Rock on! Haters...wank elsewhere!
Am I going to have to be the first to point out that this is the greatest pop song....ever?
Lovely version too. Nice job Julia.
Watch some of her other videos for better examples of her style and backstory. If anything, she should be applauded by BB readers for taking (decidedly non-professional) technological, musical, and creative abilities, combining them with some charm and a gorgeous smile, and creating something new, musical covers or otherwise. She went from posting videos on Youtube to producing her own CDs, opening for Ben Folds, and being invited to play at the next Bonnaroo. I'd say that's a good example of the web in action.
She must like BIG LOVE like me :)
Thank you, I needed that. The genuine joy in her smile, the look of happiness in her eyes... great. Simply great.
"She must like BIG LOVE like me"
Not necessarily a valid inference. At the time Julia made this video, she recorded many songs that were favorites of her parents. Check out her Beatles covers.
"So, it's official. If you're a cute girl, you have to play ukele."
Also official: if you're going to post a vapid comment, you're bound to misspell the most important word.
Oh, and #27, right on, but I'd add that she won the Bushman world ukelele competition. Any fool can be a critic, but it takes experts to pick a winner.
@ crwatson21:
I'm not sure that you know what perfect pitch actually is...
@WIRTES,
Thanks for that link! x 2
And yes, this may be the best pop song ever.
@LeavingHalfway
I do.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KZjnFZvCNc
try that.
Awesome. I love the multitrack video. An excellent homage to Les Paul, perhaps?
I'll just add that not everyone likes to hear overproduced pitch/tone-perfect songs. That sort of stuff just sounds souless to me.
In the words of Art Brut:
"Why would you want to sound like U2?
Just press record and play it straight through"
Oh college, how I miss your free time. This is what it's all about though - people messin' around and making things happen for themselves online.
If you follow the chain of her videos, this is a very early one- at least 1 1/2 old. Also, she changes the lyrics at the end of the song to "without you two". This maybe a video directed at some friends or relatives, without any pretense of making a musical statement (which she does quite by accident). This is an example of a talent emerging. I can't wait to see what comes next...
