The Freakonomics guys have apparently either really dropped the ball when it comes to understanding science, or they're willfully ignoring it. Either way, I'm pretty disappointed. Chinese alligators like a good sing-a-long, but they don't worry about carrying a tune. Wonderfully surreal. I NEVER thought I would enjoy Nancy, but this is actually good!
I like the parrot one best.
Nancy comic panels are like narrative lego blocks.
Seth Deitch (aka Dr. Ahmed Fishmonger) was doing these in his zine, "Get Stupid" in the late eighties.
Say what you will about old Nancy, Ernie Bushmiller knew the secret of drawing: three rocks. No more. No less.
Thanks, Shmerker. Color me hooked.
Strevalex, you are of the peoples republic?
Reminds me of Garfield Minus Garfield
Also, this.
@Shmerker, so as to credit the responsible parties, it was Scott McCloud who invented Five Card Nancy. Except Lee-Nova's don't even seem to have been created randomly, which is where the true magic of the synchronicity in "Nancy" comes in. So what exactly is the innovation we're celebrating here? Intellectual plagiarism done better elsewhere?
Does anyone remember or ever heard of a comic strip called "Patrick" from the mid-sixties 'till early seventies I think. I have been looking for it and would like some information. If anyone has a lead I would appreciate it - thanks.
#1 This must be that "dark side of the internet" I keep hearing about.
Bushmiller IS surrealism.
IMPORTANT: Reread the link. Gary Lee-Nova LIKES this work. The artist IS Jess.
Jess (Jess Collins 1923-2004) was a wonderful artist that many people know too little about. His work is in the permanent collection of MoMA. He had a show last year at the Tibor de Nagy Gallery. Both have pictures of his work.
#12- "reread the link"
Okay:
"...so back to Gary, who has worked on a series called Uncanny Old Gags, which remixes Nancy comics with results that while not directly related to Jess' work is equally interesting."
