Todd Schorr exhibition at San Jose Museum of Art

Pop surrealist pioneer Todd Schorr has a retrospective exhibition opening Saturday at the San Jose Museum of Art and running until September 16. True believers will want to hit the museum tomorrow (Thursday) night though, when our pals at Hi-Fructose are hosting a Surreal Night opening bash including a panel with Schorr, Camille Rose Garcia, Last Gasp publisher Colin Turner, and tattoo/comic artist Mark Bode. Schorr will also be signing copies of his beautiful new American Surreal show catalog.

I saw the show last Sunday. Very impressive from an artistic point of view. Very bizarre from the usual museum fare.

I took my seven year old daughter who spent hours sketching the art in her sketchbook. The museum even has sketching kits for loan.

Those pictures don't capture how disturbing his art can be.

I think that 100 years from now art historians will look back at what's happening centered in LA and declare it a very signficant artistic movement. Until the artSnobs start rolling in it'll be a hellofalotta fun....

Todd Schorr is a freakin' genius. Never since the golden age of Robert Williams has an artist given such attention to detail. He dredges out every pop archetype imaginable and depicts them in fantastic detail, right down to stubble and pockmarks. Indeed, his art is occasionally disturbing. As well it should be! It is also alternately hilarious, beautiful, lush and nightmarish. A true God.
