The genius of Disney Imagineer Rolly Crump

Rolly Crump, the Disney Imagineer who Kevin Kidney wrote about on Dinosaurs and Robots, drew these incredible beatnik posters in 1960. Here's one, here's another. (I like the sound of the Weed Quartet: "Lou blows Kazoo," "Turk on the Twig," "Betty bangs Tambourine," and "Booboo on the Bottle.")

Here's Rolly Crump's Tower Of The Four Winds, a 120 foot tall kinetic sculpture unveiled at the 1964 New York World's Fair

And just look at the Disneyland ticket booth for Tomorrowland that Crump designed in 1967.

Jason Groh has some more outstanding 1960s work by Crump. Says Groh, "Rolly was Tim Burton before there was a Tim Burton!"

Here's Rolly Crump's website. He's still creating wonderful art!

Great!
I could use some carefully calculated confusion right now.

I had a Summer job at WED, the place where Disneylands are designed, back at the end of the 60s (I was a student at what was becoming the California Institute of the Arts, which was Disney sponsored). Crump had a work area in a part of the big room, under the air conditioning outlet. There was a sort of indoor tent that kept most of the breeze out, but some airflow leaked down the insde of the walls. Crump had little improvided pinwheels turning in the airflow, made out of things like paper and straws with pins spinning against the bottoms of glass bottles (as low-friction bearings). And his posters were on the wall. -- Don Simpson

Those are pretty awesome! He's definitely part of the same vibe that was going around the studio's designers at the time, but leaning more towards scratchy lines (I wanna say this makes him more VIP-like than, say, Blair or Kimball, but I dunno if that's where he got it from) here and there. It's a shame his own site just has a handful of thumbnails.
