Guatemala: White Crosses To Mark Murders

crosses.jpg Just got back from a few weeks in Guatemala, where some 20 murders a day take place, and about 98% of all violent crime typically goes unprosecuted, uninvestigated. Prensa Libre today, caption: "Today, the principle roads of the city appeared painted with white crosses, an action of the Civic National Movement to remember the victims of violence and impunity."(Photo: Prensa Libre: Óscar Estrada / via @morwac)

Guatemala has known some of the worst unrest in the world. It's been tugged back and forth between left and rightists for decades now, if I remember right.
I did a paper back in the day and the most salient and sobering topic were the current excavations on the clandestine burials of the rural villages massacred by guerrillas or govt troops. The U.S. has been sending forensic anthropologists over there to help people identify their loved ones. Sometimes only from scraps of clothing or odd bone formations. Grisly, horrifying work; but I hope it's providing some people peace.

Crash victims (pedestrians killed by vehicles) in Costa Rica get a yellow painted heart on the road...there are plenty of yellow painted hearts.
