Quite a lot of photoshopping...

Photoshopping aside, I disagree with the winner.

Plus, I'm not sure if I agree with the magna/anime entry that came in at #7... really?

That can't be real.

How do I get my life to look like a fuzzy CGI cartoon?

Personally, I would have gone with the sea turtle.

Compare to original.

Also, there were less than a thousand votes. How about pointing us in the direction of these polls before they close?

Jeez, I fail at linking. Actual original, as opposed to random NYT article.

Well, beautiful horses and place. But it doesn't look like Spain at all. It is, maybe, because we are talking about The Basque Country. As New York writer Mark Kurlansky put it: "(The Basque Country)Too green to be Spain, too slopy to be France".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Kurlansky

What is that thing underneath the horse's chin?

Um.. that's what she said?

Well I like the Spanish horses. That's my new desktop, until the next squid-playing-ukelele comes along.
I think it's a cow bell?

I'm the author of the photo. I wrote about the story of this photo in my weblog. Too bad I did it in Spanish, but I think you will get the general idea. Tell me if you need a translation.

Greetings to all :)

ELI, All norther Spain is green as an emerald, except maybe some zones in Catalonia. The archetypal idea of Spain is one of a harsh land roasted by sun, but that far from real. Even southern Spain is vivid green when is not summer.

PD: yes, it´s a cowbell, a "cencerro".

@ #7 - ELI:

Whether or not you consider Navarre/Navarra/Nafarroa to be a part of the Basque Country is pretty politically loaded. I know my Basque friend does (she's from Pamplona/Iruna), and there's certainly a strong Basque cultural and historical presence, but I think, technically, it's not really "wrong" to say that Navarre/Navarra/Nafarroa is in Spain.

I used to argue with my Basque friend about this. Technically, no matter what its cultural or political aspirations, the Basque Country IS in Spain (and Southern France). In the same way that Scotland IS in the United Kingdom.

Anyway, the photo is OK. Nothing that special IMO. The Basque Country is fucking beautiful, though - easy to make look pretty.

Am I correct that these horses are in fact pottoka ponies?

I'd say it's photoshopped. That's a frickin' unicorn and they shopped out the horn!

Geeze, after the photo posted in this entry, I'm in serious need of a distasteful and painful skin condition chaser.

Please!

omg, lolponies!

Someone with 'shop/GIMP skills needs to slap a horn on these two, stat. Bonus points for changing their color (+5 white, +10 pink, +25 rainbow).

Oh yeah, and entry #7 is an anime drawing (not even a great one) "to illustrate the term 'ecchi'. Who voted in this competition? What makes me sadder is it's in the category "Non-photographic art and historic maps", because historic maps are AWESOME and should totally be picture of the year. Not...ecchi.

Anyone else think that #5 (night shot of Hong Kong) looks like it's out of some futuristic sci-fi movie?

I hate to say this but... LESS cowbell.

That would be a idealistically posed illustration rather than photo, if not for the cowbell and a bit of awkwardness with the legs.

And contrail based clouds are a bit less idealistic as well.

It is those imperfections which make the photo REAL however.

Lots of gorgeous pictures there, thanks.

Horseys FTW!

and FTR, unicorns can suck it.

Huh? It's a heavily photoshopped cheesy motivational poster (just needs a lame caption). The only things missing are some lens flare and maybe rainbow colors in the horse's mane.

I've seen a lot of actually-good photos in the past year. Were those all ineligible because they weren't Free enough? (The word "Free" is really starting to annoy me now, almost as much as it did during the "Freedom Fries" era.)

A country with such beautiful landscape deserves immediate independence. As Björk would say: Hey basques, declare independence! even if you have to photoshop it!

nice chemtrails!
