Steampunk casemod in honor of new game Damnation

Jake von Slatt sez, "Holy Mother of Zod! My arch nemesis Jake-of-All-Trades Hildebrandt has created what has to be the most definitively Steampunk casemod EVAH! Behold the Telecalculograph, Mk. II!"

It's a promo for the forthcoming game Damnation, and you can win it! Be sure to check out the "making of" video for lots of sweet little notes, like the spring-loaded tug-knob that works like a pinball launcher, which turns on the machine and spins up a flywheel, making the whole thing feel mechanical rather than electric.

I hope they can figure out a way to make the qauges work. Maybe using galvano-/volt-/ammeters, and a D/A converter, and a some software to periodically check and update them with (HDD?) Capacity, CPU Temperature, and whatever that third gauge is labelled.

That, and a heat-pipe from the CPU to a little water boiler chamber - fed by a carburator-style float valve and chamber, in turn fed by a glass graduated reservoir, kinda like cup oil reservoirs for bearings. Just to make a little steam.

Wow! I'd like to make one myself but I don't make enough money. :(

woot!

Not sure where I'd put it, but I want it...

The steam would be a nice effect, but completely impractical. First, since most electronics design temperature is below the boiling point of water, you'd probably have to work extra hard to get steam, unless you played games with a compressor and pressure differentials. Second, the condensation would eventually f- the whole thing up.

I would want a steampunk LCD, mouse and keyboard to go with, I mean what's the case without the other stuff?
one can dream and be greedy.
This guy is my case art hero, I've been gathering materials and have several themed computer cases being built and I'm glad I'm not to into my steampunk desktop because I'm going to redo just about the whole thing

I have exactly the pump to lower the pressure inside a vessel to allow water to boil at low temps ... but it uses a fair amount of power. I guess it would be nice for demos! You wouldn't want to run it while sitting there reading boingboing ...

Uh... *WHERE* can I win this?

Have checked http://steampunkworkshop.com/damnation-hildebrandt and http://damnation.blueomega.com/ but don't see any contest/sweepstakes/prize-winning mechanism.

Must. Have.

Well done, down to the little doors in the lagging covering the media slots. It could use a big honking lever or valve as an on/off switch.

If you want steam, you could always use something that boils at a rather lower temperature than water. You'd want an enclosed system; but that isn't a huge deal.

One time I made a tea skirt out of fabric requiring steam press. The material reflected light at 50 amperes and OMG it was the BOMB!

This is the most genuine and jaw dropping steampunk mod I've ever seen. Just when I thought I was over it, they pull me back in. *Drools*

#12 - My exact thoughts! It would be epic if the gauges actually represented disk space or power consumption. But no matter, it's still tastefully gorgeous.

The into note says the case is going to be given away, but I don't see anything about that on the Codemasters or Hildebrandt sites. Anyone know how to enter?

Oo! The third dial is "Secondary Temperature".

Steam: It doesn't have to be pressurized, boiling hot steam. Have the 'boiling tank' open at the top with a small pipe out (capped with a whistle? a brass bird with the steam coming out of its beak?), for the (probably invisible) steam to escape.

You heat up the water from the heat drawn from the CPU (what's a CPU run at? Mine's at 65degC+ on a hot day). It'd evaporate the water: transfer of heat by phase change. Probably reasonably efficient, and might make up for the loss of cooling by using a wooden case, rather than metal.

Giveaway: the text was there when I visited the site this morning (At 4AM!?! What time zone is boingboing using?), but it's been removed!

However, according to destructoid.com:
"Well, rumor has it you may be able to win it over the next few months in a contest being held by some videogame Web site whose mascot is a green robot." I have no idea what site that is but I'm sure someone out these knows.

No sign of the case mod giveaway, but I found a contest by IGN for a cool-looking Damnation steampunk PS3 at http://microsites.ign.com/damnation/contest/. You have to submit an original design for a steampunk console. Kind of an infinite loop, I guess.

Rules here:
http://microsites.ign.com/damnation/contest/rules.html

Deadline is May 30.
