beautiful - again Jake! There must be someway to make the sphere a functioning element...
That is absolutely gorgeous. I love the idea of adapting modern electronics into something classic and elegant.
Sweet! The overall look is most cool indeed!
It looks like it would rattle a whole lot, though... maybe that's part of the fun?
Why is there a toilet tank float apparatus mounted underneath? Please tell me that's some kind of physical reverb system! =D
@nosehat - every screw has a dab of glue or Locktite. The front is re-enforced with 3/4" ply set in a bed of poly-urethane adhesive and the back is gasketed with natural wool felt.
It will not rattle
I hope those knobs go to 11.
And those three holes in the brass plate are just screaming out for some kind of use. Pressure gauge style VU meters perhaps?
If knobs' max output are set to anything less than eleven then young man you'll need a swift redesign!
nice work!
How, exactly, is this steampunk? All this looks to be is an early (circa 1920's) radio cabinet (in and of itself including an amplifier and speaker section already) with a few brass pieces grafted on for effect. To be sure, the workmanship is fine, but I'm not seeing this as being all that novel.
maybe a spring reverb inside the dome?
@7 -- I think the ornamentation and style give it a Victorian vibe, even though the design tropes were still alive in the '20s alongside Art Deco.
And it should, as @6 suggests, go to XI
I'm going to hazard a guess that Thorzdad is no fun at parties.
Meanwhile, I have a Leslie rotating speaker (actually just a rotating styrene block) I ripped out of an old Hammond organ that I wasn't sure what to do with. Now I know. Bwah hah hahahhaha!
@usonia - Damn! that's what the steel orb should have been, a Leslie speaker!
I like this a lot! I assume the top part lifts off the legs (as in most Victorian-era furniture) for transportation? Agree that it would be nice to make the sphere functional. This looks like something the guys from The Decemberists would love...
ah ha

I agree with replacing the steel ball thingy with a leslie speaker. That way you get the "random moving thing" aspect as well.
Just realised how easily this could be made into a Mad Scientist- style contraption. A Jacob's Ladder here, a few scissor switches there....
I am so loving everything SteamPunk!
There wells within my bosom such a yearning to participate. I've had a lot of jobs where all the resources were right at hand and under foot. Alas, not now- I'm working at home. Poop.
Very steampunk 200 %. An anachronistic Masterpiece. I can imagine the steel ball under being a sort of steam tank . Exquisite craftsmanship .
The ball underneath should definitly be radiating some kind of random dangerous-looking electricity.

Its a beautiful piece of work. Nice restoration of the radio cabinet, electro etching, and integration of the amp and nice big Celestron speaker.
I've been working on something similar with a 10" Celestron and a 5 watt class-A amp built by Mr. Bill. Currently it looks similar to a 1930s radio, sounds great, but is not antique'd enough for serious looking at.
The ball underneath should shoot out little puffs of steam, with a "Toot!"
When I build a SteamPunk contraption, it's gotta have bellows. Nothing says SteamPunk like pumping bellows and stream spouts.
should have mentioned in #19, "knife switch" is the second and what I think you were looking for.
Wow finially have a real steampunk item. It should be something that work but appears old or made from availible parts in the past.
Alot of the the other stuff is just decorative widgets that do nothing. They may look interesting but arent "steampunk"
I have a subtle steampunk amp I've done
hmm, how to post I do not know? ...
