That's a cool looking bottle opener. I might just have to pick one up. Either the bulldog or one of those nice brass ones.

Something else that's handy is to install a small cap catcher underneath. A quick search led me here: http://www.bottleopener.com/Bottle-Cap-Catchers-p-1-c-1.html

The bulldog and a matching black catcher would look pretty cool in a home bar.

Is it just me or do modern phillips head drywall screws always look slightly absurd when used to fasten up old kit, or reproductions of old kit?

I visited a reproduction 17th century farm, which had a living history team actually living on site five days a week, and I spotted phillips screws holding the latch to the cowshed. Tiny little detail that just screamed "I don't belong in this picture" like it was ten feet tall.

I fell in love with one of those awhile back and bought it. To my considerable disappointment, it was an utter failure as a bottle opener. Caveat imbibo!

I have this item & it works in an odd manner. Normally you'd stick a bottle in a wall opener and pull upwards and towards you.

This one, you push the bottle down and away from you.

Additionally, occasionally the bottle cap manages to fall into the dog's mouth. And goddamn if it ain't a 15 minute project to get it out when that happens.

For some reason, my frustrations with the item only further endear it to me.

It's like it was designed in an intentionally frustrating and kludgey manner & there's something delightful about that.

I own this item as well. It does NOT work well, but it does look nice.

@#4 - Think of the way a hand-held opener works. They're push so you don't spill any in a hurry, as the bottle is vertical once the cap falls off. Establishments around here usually just have hand-held openers (I'm presuming for the branding aspect), but I'm fairly sure most mounted openers in bars are push-operated.

No, it's not just you- it was the first thing I thought when I saw this. It's a particularly egregious example, as the screws are in rather prominent positions, and seem to have extremely flat heads. It is possible to get round-headed Phillips screws- I think these look much less intrusive on metal casts.

Needs lipstick.

btw.totally agree about the Phillips heads looking wrong
