LaidOffCamp NY, May 1&2, 2009
Nate Heasley, longtime friend of BB and occasional guest blogger for BB Gadgets, wrote to tell me about an event that he's helping to organize called LaidOffCamp NY. It's a two-day event this coming Friday and Saturday that is all about "hacking the job search." On Friday the event kicks off with a panel discussion and networking reception, and Saturday there will be an unconference about how to bounce-back from being laid-off, whether that's reinventing yourself, going back to school, finding your next gig, starting your own company, or just figuring out what to do with your free time. The event is free (donation suggested) and there are still tickets available. Even if tickets run out there will be an open casual-networking event on Saturday evening at the John Street Bar & Grill. Those who might want to help sponsor the event, contact Nate directly.

I'd feel better if it wasn't sponsored by the Soylent Corporation.
Wow, a NYC-based event... and in Helvetica NYC-subway style graphics! How creative!
It seems like mediocre graphic artists have NOTHING to worry about, the recession notwithstanding.... Hack your typeface collection, dudes!
For a second out there I tought the camp name was "GetLaidCampNY".
I believe that LaidOffCamp is right next to the ThereAreNoJobs swamp.
I've been unemployed for the past month, but now I've got two offers I have to decide between. I would go to this, but I'm busy.
well, if you've got two what are you doing about giving the other one to someone who needs it? Hmmmm?
As a sponsor/exhibitor at LaidOffCamp/SF (wearing my Coworking Coach hat), if the format and mood is similar, then I can highly recommend participation.
The SF event brought in a lot of folks apparently not experienced with the *Camp format, yet got them interactively sharing and learning from each other, exploring new options. A marked contrast from the media frame of it as a "pink slip party" of dionysian celebration or frustrated sharing of misery: I saw eyes opening, minds at work, people finding new ways of moving forward.
I'm glad to see that NYC's New Work City (hi, Mayor Tony!) is a sponsor of this one; Sandbox Suites and folks from several other Bay Area spaces joined me in SF and we had some great conversation in an interactive session around coworking, ad-hoc Jelly Sessions, and new alternatives to offices.
As my friend, coworking pioneer (with Gate3 Workclub in Emeryville, CA) and author Betsy Burroughs (now of FutureCatalyst) puts it, too many folks, upon leaving their desk jobs, work hard to recreate all the constraints and frustrations of their office cubicle environment at home, rather than using their newfound freedom to organize the physical and social supports and connections that will help them be more happy and productive.
Not Free Now, SAYS THAT PARTS FULL.
@#8: 50 additional free tickets have been made available, I think. I'm not in control of the ticketing, but apparently we have to do it in batches or something. Sorry for any confusion.
@Raines Cohen: thanks for the boost! We really appreciate our supporters.
@#3: hey, y'never know who you'll meet... :)
@2: If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
As New York's Official (Un)employment Network, The405Club.com * the405club.ning.com, we recommend this event!
