Yoga teacher, age 83

Bette Calman is a yoga instructor at age 83. She teaches as many as 11 classes a week and has no plans to retire. From News.com.au:
Yogaaaa"Even a basic posture, or just going to a window and breathing deeply, can have big benefits."

It's that spirit that has made Mrs Calman a legend. The author of three yoga books was a pioneer of the regime in Australia in the 1950s, ran yoga centres interstate for 33 years and made regular TV appearances in the 70s.
"Yoga instructor Bette Calman still going strong at 83" (Thanks, Tara McGinley!)

God, please stop covering yoga lifestyle interest stories!
Is this even boingboing, or has it turned into instyle?

Ah, come on, this is pretty awesome! I just hope I get to go for a walk at 83. This is inspiring.

The article itself is a little sparse, but hey - very cool nonetheless.

There are some fantastic leisure-suit yoga photos of Mrs Calman at http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1172810/The-yoga-supergran-bend-backwards-age-83.html

I've done yoga classes run by that woman!

I feel like I've scored my own kind of BoingBoing merit badge by proxy.

#1:and the next guy says:
- o god please stop covering that steampunk crap
and then the next guy says
- o wtf what's up with the cute frickin kittens!
and then
- why all this stuff about politics!

and so it goes...
then they stopped covering my point of interest... and no one was there to stand up for me.

I always thought this was called "boing boing" because you never knew what you'd end up at. I mean, half the stuff is of no interest to me and the other half moderately interesting and a third half is really quite interesting.

And for the record - i've got an 85 yr old grandmother and i sent my mom this article to shar it with her (grandma of course doesn't have a computer). So this is inspiring. Take your steampunkish cynicism elsewhere.

She might be in the new right now, bu she's got NOTHING on Emmy Cleaves.

Emmy is a Bikram yoga instructor. (That's the 90 minute yoga class done in a 105 degree room.) She is the most senior instructor next to Bikram and his wife, teaching with him for the last 30+ years. She leads the advanced classes at the main studio in LA and puts us bendy young ones to shame. Emmy is also in her mid 80's, but unlike the woman in this other article, she doesn't look it; she looks maybe 65. She is cool as hell.

A little more detail if you like: http://bikramyoga.com/A_Tribute_to_Emmy.htm

I practice yoga, and I've always kind of thought of it as a great way to keep my meat machine maintained, seeing as I never got any kind of warranty. You can even use it to hack your way to greater functionality, and it's way more affordable than cryogenics in ensuring that you get to live in the future...

My Mom in law is 92 and doing amazingly well she does drink 3 glasses of red wine every night and cheers for UNC sports.
I really think longevity is in our unique gene pool.

Yay! Bette lives in my home town - Williamstown and I think she'd be quite delighted to become an international superstar of yoga.

thanks for this, i am super happy to hear about this woman.

One of my most beloved teachers, Dharma Mittra, may only be 69, but he is certainly one of the most inspiring beings i have ever met. visit his site to see pictures of him standing on his head without using his hands or a mat on a nyc sidewalk.

There will be a big 70th birthday celebration for him on sat may 16 in nyc, that i am excited to attend.

oh, and here is a picture of dharma with swami bua, who is somewhere in the neighborhood of 115 years old. From what I hear Swami's yoga classes consist of him stomping around the room flexing his biceps, shouting "I am strong, you are weak."
can't wait to get on my mat with that guy.

Wow, this old lady does things that I can't do at my 30's.

I like the photo. I notice she's not using a $90 yoga mat. She must be doing something wrong...

I can't believe the pose she's doing at her age! She's awesome!!
