Michael Jackson face appears in Muhammed Ali video: hoax or pareidolia?

Forgetomori posted this video of the George Foreman and Muhammad Ali fight from 1974. He notes that during one second of the video (between 5:45 and 5:46) something that looks like the head of Michael Jackson, circa 2000, appears.

It could be a hoax, a bizarre face added digitally and recently to the scene, as what we assume would be the black hair around the face is actually transparent.

On the other hand, there are some things that interact with the image – passing both in front and behind the “face” – which suggest that it was not such a bad editing job. And also suggest that perhaps it’s not a hoax, but pareidolia. Even if I have no idea of what could have looked like a face with glowing eyes. Certainly the height of that face is not right, it’s at the height of everyone else’s waists. Perhaps a bag? I don’t know.

If you don't want to wait for the video to load, visit Forgetomori's blog, where he has an animated GIF of the relevant section. Michael Jackson face appears in Muhammed Ali video: hoax or pareidolia?

Super Fake.. He looks like a Zombie..

Of course you realize now we're going to have to start adding the Disembodied Head of Michael Jackson to reels of every major sports event of the 20th century.

A guess from the blog's comments is that it's a tshirt... but it would have to be a time traveler's shirt, since this video is from 1974.

I think I saw the present-day face of Michael Jackson during an old episode of "Tales from the Crypt."

I could see the whites of his eyes, but only the whites of his eyes.

It’s not Michal Jackson, but a somewhat famous Japanese ghost meme that’s on all the ghost hunter websites.

Here’s an example:

Oh, how I do love a good pareidolia, but this is just a regular ol’ fake.

I think that something distorts the face of the real person making it look like MJ. If you look closely the face changes to a white man's face for a second right after it look likes MJ.

Jacko, Bumaye! Jacko, Bumaye!

It's an artifact of YouTube's video compression algorithm. The image of Michael Jackson's face is known to be especially easy to compress and can help save bandwidth when there is a lot of movement between frames.

#7 I knew it was something like that. lol

Same reason they used that Indian Head test pattern, only analog, right?

No way. It's totally Michael. His extensive plastic surgery has clearly given him incredible time travel powers. The evidence speaks for itself.

Unfortunately, I can’t figure out his motive here. One would assume that he’d travel back in time to fondle little boys rather than catch a historic boxing match.

I kept pausing/unpausing until the image was gone.. at the last moment before it disappears, it looks like a man wearing glasses that may be reflecting lights in the arena.

That's freakin' creepier than the alien outside of Stan Romanek's window.

It looks more like Ozzy Osborne than Michael Jackson to me, so it could be a shirt. Plus, this can't be the only extant copy of this footage on the web, so it could be determined whether it's fake. Whatever the case, it's pretty neat.

Looks like a hoax to me. The image appears naturally in the lower right corner for about a second, but in that view, it is clearly a flare off somebody's eyeglasses, or maybe a stereoscopic camera lens pair. After watching several times, it looks to me as though that same image does NOT appear in the indicated location, at least not in the natural video, although it DOES appear in the gif. A bit of a cut and paste job?

The J-ghost solution seems the most likely, but I see weird stuff like this regularly when recovering deleted files from people computers. Sometimes the data gets mashed up in interesting ways.

Super fake, but good job of making it credible by leaving it in a long piece of footage.

I'm going to go with a t-shirt of Ozzy Osborne on this one.

Not MJ, just illusion of MJ, if you freeze the frames it appears to be a light skinned person (woman) with glasses on, the "glowing eyes" are from reflections off her glasses.

Anybody have analog tape of this footage (or commercial DVD) to check? I suspect it's a freak illusion and not a deliberate hoax.

Who else read Pareidolia as Pedophilia just because MJ's name is in the title?

The gif was useless.

If someone could get the Youtube video out of its flash wrapper and into a video player than can handle frame by frame, it would be easier to figure out. Is there another version h.264 or such available via YouTube?

Jeremy I read Pareidolia that way as well.

Looks like a picture of Robert Smith circa "Head on the Door" but I guess it couldn't be if this is from 1974.

I would go with glasses on a person since I couldn't see any reflection in anyone else's eyes however the way it appears is pretty freaky. Maybe an onlooker from another world? Probably not but it definitely gave me the heebie jeebies!!!

Jacko was 16 at the time. No Surgery yet. Ozzy was still with Sabbath and hadn't started wearing the round shades yet.
So it has to be the dimensional portal that Slash form GNR owns. He's always going back and copping licks from Duane Allman and Dickey Betts.

t-shirt , you can see it coming in from the right.

.p.s it only looks like jacko because of the long hair curl , which, if you watch it 'live' is caused by the flex cord of the boom mike.

VLC has native support for FLV as well as frame by frame playback.

This is yearning to be memed. Michael Jackson's face MUST start to appear across the internet spliced into historical sports events.

Who's going to fire the first shot?

So, the MRS conference (of Science as art fame) is over and I admittedly have time on my hands.

I listened to suggestions in these comments and did a bit of "analysis" on the video. Clicky the linky to see what I decided about this video:

I'm one of many of Michael Jackson fans,
I think people make themselves believe they see him so they feel hes still here on earth.
C'mon hes in a better place.
He's prob laughing in heaven thinking woah they are still obsessing over me.
He's not Jesus or God although I believe he had a kind heart very caring aswell.
There so many possitive and inspiring videos of Michael on tv and on the Internet.
You dont need to make up rubbish just to feel hes still here.
His Music. His Legacy. Lives on.
Isnt that enough?
;')
