"The mayor will have to hash this out with public health officials," press secretary Nathan Ballard said. "It's the mayor's job to weed out bad legislation. And to be blunt, this sounds pretty bad."Mirkarimi proposal: Let S.F. sell medical pot (SF Gate, via Wayne's List)

Jason Brammer's hand-painted eyeball matrioshka, "The Watchers," is a fine addition to the genre of crazy-awesome stuff you can do with blank nested dolls. We've been following artist Shepard Fairey's work here on Boing Boing for some time now. A disclaimer, first: I love his work, we have mutual friends, he strikes me as a stand-up guy. Sounds like that spokesman has gone to pot.
should be stoned
It's a cronic problem.
To be fair, Takuan, it was a joint decision.
Perhaps the whole thing should be reefered to a higher court?
Too bad they couldn't keep a lid on it.
Like weed've missed the opportunity to roll out those quotes? Leaf the poor guy alone.
Legalized marijuana will always be a pipe dream.
When your spokesman plants something like that in the press, it can really fuck you up...
It would be a shame to see the City of San Francisco ruin a perfectly good home grown and necessarily anti-corporate industry.
Don't you see, this means nothing can stand against hemp! His career is just budding, now that he's shaking the shwag out by its roots before it can go to seed.
lol! that's some good shit! i bet someone's eyes are red over this kerfluffle! talk about expansionist powers!
I never thought that Gavin Newsom would act like such a dope.
If weed is legal will the puns end? Please?!
No.
I don't think I've laughed so hard at a simple "No." before.
wat
*cough*
There are those that say this is a half-baked plan, and I say to them: This plan is completely baked.
Will give new meaning to Hitchcock's San Francisco based movie
Vertigo.
Also, SF should just say, "You know what? Since everybody already enjoys mocking us for being stoner hippies, we're not just going to legalize medical pot, we're going to legalize recreational pot.
And to those who will undoubtedly criticize us? We say: We'll undoubtedly see you as a tourist soon enough."
Spokesperson for Mayor Gavin Newsom's office on a proposal
This stems from the earlier Proposition 4-20.
Usually we expect politicians to be blowing so much smoke, but this one leaves a refreshing aftertaste. He may think his re-election is in the bag, but he'll probably take a pounding from the press for this.
... but he'll probably take a pounding from the press for this.
I'd say he's going to get absolutely hammered.
whoa..
dude
duuuude
Politicians being skunks is a chronic problem, but if he means an eighth of what he says then the man's better than a roach. He won't be getting his nose out of joint.
Sorry to drift from Cheech-and-Chong humour into momentary pedantry, but:
1. "Flak" means hostile criticism, metaphorically. More literally, antiaircraft fire -- it's an acronym made from the German word for that.
2. "Flack" (with "c") is a slang term for a press agent.
So the quote is from a "government flack", and you are giving that flack flak.
Carry on now.
Dave's not here.
Best. Press statement. EVER!!! 8O
Dank God this isn't happening in my home town!
I bet he's feeling high and mighty now, but after the smoke clears, people are just going to be hungry for more.
Outside of drinking and sex, what else has that many slang terms to describe it?
Urshrew: gambling.
Best. BoingBoing thread. Ever.
His press officer really said that? I find it dewbie-ous
When will the higher-ups realize that prohibition is bunk? They need to roll with the people, instead of twisting facts. I hope this blazes through the legislature, and that people get fired up over it. If we pull hard enough, hopefully we can begin to filter out some of the harsh politicians who seem to have been given their powers prematurely.
I'm not holding my breath on this one.
I think this thread is high-larious.
Sounds like they're crunk with power.
dr srs,
plz rnw my sbscrptn t bongbong

I don't think this proposal is high on the mayor's list of priorities. He'd much rather prefer a joint effort with the community.
WTF IS GOIN ON HERE. WHO CARES IF ITS AGAINST THE LAW OR NOT WEED WILL ALWAYS BE HERE. BEEN SMOKED SINCE MAN FIRST MADE FIRE AND BURNED ALOT OF SHIT.
He should have said, "This seems pretty dubious."
Hah! Mirkarimi is the supervisor for my district.
Take this to mean what you will, but I live about five blocks from the intersection of Haight and Ashbury.
This might just be a sign of the hightimes, but I think the politicians will puff and puff on this, but eventually pass.
actually, it should be doobie-us.
Anonymous @ 45 - i think they toke that without saying ;)
