Portraits of US Presidents' mistresses

Presidents-Girlfriends

Annie Kevans has painted a lovely series of oil portraits of the girlfriends of U.S. Presidents.

Shown above: Kay Summersby (Dwight D Eisenhower), Monica Lewinsky (Bill Clinton), Maria Halpin (Grover Cleveland), Pam Turnure (John F Kennedy), Jill Cowan (John F Kennedy), Blaze Starr (John F Kennedy), Marilyn Monroe (John F Kennedy), Madeleine Brown (Lyndon B Johnson). James Buchanan and his VP King were thought to be lovers?

I should point out that Ike's fling with Summersby was when he was a general, not president.

IANAA, but those sure look like watercolors to me.

Comment retracted. On artist's website: oil on paper. Fooled me.

I guess you could say each of these women went down in history.

Good move. Everywhere else in the world a politician's mistress is ho-hum.

Hay, William Rufus DeVane King!

Also: JFK's year-in-office to mistress ratio is astronomical.

The title appears to be a misnomer, as it is All the President's Girls + a Guy. The fact that a male is included with these 'girlfriends' is as interesting as the paintings themselves.

ooookay. Without being told, I'd never have recognized Marilyn or Monica. Either that makes it more artistic or less, I'm not sure.

Nothing like preserving the union through... um, various forms of "unitions."

Eh, #3 Big Ed Dunkel has the best line so far.

She needs to do one of Jeff Gannon (George W. Bush).

good idea.. poor execution.

Other than the hairstyles they look a lot alike.

Those are very nice little pictures, but I'm with #7. Even having been told that one of them is Monica and one of them is Marilyn, I just don't see it.

JFK whatuuuup!!!!

Maybe I'm a Philistine, but shouldn't a portrait of a person be at least somewhat recognizable as that person?

It's funny how much we all read into Lincoln's biography -often applying a very modern view to phrases and behaviors that were most likely innocuous in that day and age, to infer that he might have been gay. And all along, there's a huge body of evidence that his immediate predecessor, Buchanan, really and truly was. It seems like an awful lot of wasted energy.

Apparently being President is teh chick magnet.

@#15

Good point. It's just that Lincoln is famous and important and Buchanan . . . not. In a different context, gay comedian Scott Capurro noticed back in the 90's that a ton of rumors were flying around in the gay community to the effect that Tom Cruise was gay, but nobody ever cared if Bob Hoskins was gay or not.

I can't help but wonder who's gonna sue over the use of reference photos.

Jesus Christ! How did JFK get anything done while being in office for a fraction of a term?

good idea..bad execution. i like the aesthetic, but the likenesses of some of the more recognizable women are disappointing...is that paula jones post surgery, and please spend more time on marilyn monroe she better looking than that. kind of disappointed.

I'm with *everyone*. Good concept. Poor execution.

Because they can.

Except when they can't -- in Eisenhower, Stephen Ambrose says the potential affair with Kay Summersby was not consummated, owing to the Lil' General's failure to salute, according to Eisenhower's self-report.

^ The real reason Clinton was excited about becoming president.

@6, I resent that... I've yet to be a politician's mistress! :)

why do we focus on these unfaithful deeds..we talk about it as though it is excepted..If the wives are willing to forgive and forget I say that is up to them..But to bring it into the public eye like it is an ordinary event is unexceptable. We have taken many issues and allowed them to be normal by looking the other way. Why do we except so easily the things that are so obviously a desperate sin? Divorce has become the in thing now...Why do we even walk down the aisle if we can so easily dismiss our vows as if they meant nothing to begin with..If all these men were so unhappy in their marriage why not either resolve it or get out of it instead of creating an embarrassment to their entire family..I say because it is and will always be "all about them"..A selfish act..

William Rufus DeVane King wasn't Buchanan's VP, he was Pierce's VP, but died before serving. He was rumored to be Buchanan's mate though.
