Medals for video-game veterans

Nothing complements the thousand-yard-stare of a gamer who's been through the Console Wars and seen the worst atrocities that toons can wreak against sprites than a medal to celebrate your achievement. Super Mandolini's "Console Wars Veteran" pins are those medals.

While I find these amusing, I've got to admit I feel a bit disturbed at the thought of handing out medals for anything but valor in war or sacrificial public service. I mean, those are really earned, and I hate to see their symbolism cheapened.

I see all the 8-bit consoles are ignored, except for the NES.

More revisionist history from a generation that ignores the true past!

Rockin! How sweet would a Dreamcast medal be.

Will there be a "Medal of Honor" Medal of Honor?

#5 -- History is written by the victors, your underground Sega Master system movement was crushed... the vanquished rarely get medals.

@4

it's military bling, I find the original symbolism equally disturbing. If I'd done something for my co-warriors I wouldn't use it to show off afterwards.

What about medals for the developers/programmers/designers/artist in the trenches, on death march crunches putting all this stuff out?

Atari 2600, baby...

Colecovision...

Then I discovered the fun of playing games on my Apple ][+ around 1984 or so...

I didn't get me a PSX until the PS2 came out; didn't get a PS2 until the PS3 was out, etc.

I'm sure the men and women paying the ultimate sacrifice would find these amusing as well...

I'm sure the men and women paying the ultimate sacrifice couldn't care less.

In meatspace you can get actually knighted...with a sword...by the Queen and everything, for recording a few platinum albums or owning a lot of supermarkets. This is small potatoes irony-wise.

I don't know what caused it, but BB comments are officially in a state of humor recession.

This makes me depressed.

When I bought the Hearts of Iron II Anthology, I received a medal in the box. I pinned to an old Canadian air force jacket I have and I wear it every time I play the game.

Risking death from obesity is not a form of bravery.

You've obviously never reached level 27 on the hard setting on Germ Buster for the Wii. That's earning.

ya I thought they were cool then suddenly my grampa's world war 2 stories popped into my head and made me feel really slimey. He didn't even get a medal neither. *sigh*

8 years of bush and a polarizing of left vs right vs whoever else wants a piece. I suspect that is what sucked the humour out of alot of boing boingers.

I agree that medals should be given for important and notable achievements however who is to say that they cannot be for lighthearted ones as well?

The gaming world is always evolving. First with trophies and now with medals. I think that there is nothing wrong with this since everyone is doing what they can in this economy to stay in business!
