Sudo Make Me a Sandwich: the robot edition

Inspired by one of the funniest goddamned XKCD strips of all time, Bre Pettis and Adam Cecchetti have built a "Sudo make me a sandwich robot" that makes a sandwich when you tell it to.

Thank you MBTA trains for not running today, so I could snarf my coffee in a coffee shop and not at work.

That's no sort of sudo! He didn't have to enter an admin password, and it didn't even tell him to behave responsibly!

I love how sloppily it throws together a sandwich though, so I guess I'll let it slip...

My MBTA train was running so I snarfed my coffee at work, if only I had some toast.

He said "sammich," which makes the rest of their presentation completely lame by definition.

OK, the video is better than the use of the word "sammich."

My bad.

That robot sucks and it didn't work. The bread and cheese didn't fall properly, but when they show it going into the oven, it's fixed.

Shenanigans!

I feel deeply betrayed. I thought this was really something revolutionary. I though this was a world changing video. But no. It's a farce. Now my day is ruined.

oooo I just want to fix the delivery mechanism for them

I put on my robe and pedantic hat. You don't enter the admin password with sudo, you enter your normal user password. That's the whole point with sudo. To give normal users access to run certain commands as root without giving them the root password. Also, sudo has a time limit built in (it leaves a daemon running for a few minutes) so that you don't have to enter your password every time you do sudo.

I bet they could ramp up the accuracy with a pneumatic mechanism.. little suction cups that pick up the bread and cheese, delivering it to a precise location each time.

And what good is a sandwich without mustard and mayo? Or meat?

An admirable proof of concept however, the project needs a bigger budget.

It needs a stacking mechanism. Why, that last shot of the perfect sandwich has to have been adjusted. All the previous shots show haphazard cheese and bread arrangements. I'm thinking two mechanical "arms" on the side that push in after each fall.

looks a little like this:
| sammich | to
-|sammich|-

The ensures that the bread and cheese will be centered, on one axis at least. Maybe a fold-out section of the arms could account for the other axis.

I wonder if the cheese will slide or bend? That is the important bit really.
