Del the wooden-machine-maker's latest hand-cranked wondermental gewgaw

Del, the enbearded wooden cranked contraption maker (possibly the coolest goddamned maker we've ever featured here on Boing Boing!) returns with this marvellous machine. From Dug North, "This is a nice example of a mechanism that converts reciprocating motion into circular motion via a ratchet mechanism. The really cool thing about his particular design is that it does not matter which direction you turn the crank -- the ratchet will always rotate in the same direction. Very clever."

"enbearded.'' Love it.

Del is my new hero.

Thanks for the great post.

beautiful. If i had wooden teeth, i would want them pulled with this device.

It seems to me that devices like the one shown here are a great resource for understanding how bio-molecules work.

Enzymes work under some of the same constraints as these devices and solve similar problems.

What do you all think?

Somebody get his address. We'll want this guy after the apocalypse.

gewgaw is one of the words of the day on apple's "word of the day" screen saver today. neat.

Respect! That was definitely a wonderful thing.

The escapement component turns "linear" motion into circular motion. There is no clockwise or counter-clockwise in the linear motion so it should be totally unsurprising that the circular motion always goes the same way. Del is so dissing North by pointing this out and North is so clueless it hurts. ROTFLMAO.

I love the clacking and the creaking noises!

So why couldn't you hook this mofo up to some tidal power?!? Back and forth. Back and forth. All day long. Every single day.

Beautiful. I like this even better than the first one you posted. This guy must be a living encyclopedia of woodworking techniques; it isn't easy to execute mechanically complex designs in wood.
