Believe in Alyssa Milano, absolutely. Believe in Uncle Sam, not so much.
That was the saddest thing I've ever seen. Funny or Die? Die.
Spot on. I sez Funny.
This is sheer f$cking brilliance. Wow.
Style over substance in this one. Cute but... DIE!
Somehow, it seems more sobering than funny.
I pretty much don't care about any Oscar category this year except for the ones where the Wrestler is involved, in which case I hope it wins. It probably won't win since it's subject matter is probably considered too lowbrow. I don't imagine the people who vote for the awards are all that into wrestling, so they probably won't get it. But man... while watching that movie, I kept thinking to myself "THIS IS AMERICA".
This little piece is pitch perfect. You people who are saying "DIE" should instead go see The Wrestler so you can understand this supremely awesome parody.
Not funny, but I really liked it...so DON'T DIE!
@#7 pureevilmatt,
I haven't seen ''The Wrestler,'' but I have a question that you could answer for me, if you would:
Does the movie treat professional wrestling as a legitimate competitive sport?
I'm more with the sobering / die crowd... and Wrestling is lowbrow, PureEvilMatt (#7).
It's theatre with a one string plot (he's good, he's bad, fake fight!),bad actors and a dog of a soundtrack. Good pyrotechnics, mind.
I haven't seen The Wrestler... but I've seen enough Mickey Rouke to know what style of performance he gives (the same, everytime). It's just fortunate that he's been given the opportunity to do his thing with decent material.
This is one of the few times Funny or Die has actually crossed into insightful. Not only is this a reasonably amusing political critique, but it's dead on for the tone and style of The Wrestler, which, though it IS a fairly lowbrow, simple drama, is filled with fantastic performances.
@10-
It's pretty clear Rourke is through as a leading man, and as an actor in general, but The Wrestler was a case of perfect casting and direction for the script. Think Nick Cage in Leaving Las Vegas. Another squandered potential falling into exactly the right roll.
I agree with all y'all who say this is too depressing to work.
Nice try, though.
I'm not really sure how people who haven't seen The Wrestler are fit to discuss Rourke's performance. He hasn't exactly been prolific as of late. Try seeing it before you knock on it.
And re: wrestling as a sport... The movie isn't about sports, it's about theatre/performance, which is all that professional wrestling is. Sure, the guys lift weights, but they're also all shown as juicers.
