Mt. Holly Mayor Mike Haeg says:

Where can one go to pedal up a pot of fresh brewed coffee on a bicycle, take a healthy sauna in a functioning distillery, liberate Poutine and French-Canadians through absurdo-political-mercantilism, hitch a ride in an art car taxi, listen to Chilly Willy pound out a drum solo, confess one's sins in a Norse church, and spend three hours playing the world’s largest cribbage board? Why, on the frozen Medicine Lake in beautiful Plymouth, Minnesota, of course.

These are just a few of the artist built ice fishing shacks and programmed events that are a part of the 2009 Art Shanty Projects.

This is the sixth year for the event that challenges artists to create outside of their disciplines and traditional studio-to-gallery environment and to make art accessible and engaging to the bundled up, general public.

The citizenry of Mt. Holly experienced the Art Shanty Projects for the first time last year and we were so inspired, that we submitted our own shanty idea this year; 5 giant, Oldenburg-esque dice stocked with dice, cards, and board games. We call them The dICEHOUSES Shanty. They reintroduce families, friends and strangers to to the conversation, warmth, and closeness fostered by the cadence of table games.

You can follow our building and updates at the dICEHOUSES bLOG.

Sounds like they should call it "freezing man".

Friends of mine through the Elsewhere Artist Collaborative in Greensboro, NC have a shanty called The Imperial TransAntarctic Expedition, based upon the story of Ernest Shackleton and his ill-fated journey to the South Pole.

Expedition members are Molly Goldberg, Mary Rothlisberger and Amber Phelps Bondaroff.

The description of their shanty is as follows:

From 1914-1917, Ernest Shackleton and his crew were stranded in the South Pole. For an entire Antarctic winter, 28 men lived under an overturned rowboat. What saved them from sure death? Optimism, storytelling, music, community, and a playful thirst for adventure. Survive with us through pageants, icecapades, lanternside chats, storytime, sing-alongs, & other adventures to boost morale on the frozen lake!

They have a blog set up, as well as a flickr set detailing their exploits.

Please send firewood & warm thoughts to:

That picture looks pretty good when run through the tilt-shift generator you posted a week or so ago.

No discussion of ginormous red dice at an art festival can be complete without mentioning Amazing Larry's Luck 7: http://www.fluxdesign.com/lucky7/index.html

[it's hard to keep the FARGO accent up like this, in print]

I just moved my mom up to Min-nah-soh-tah this weekend from Florida. She was born in Nova Scotia, so she's all ready for the cold, but doesn't have all the gear you need to really enjoy yourself outside, yet.

Here's the link to the event http://www.winter-carnival.com/, and I hope they have some nice pictures up already. We saw some pictures on the Weather Channel, on the drive up, and needless to say, the folks in Atlanta are not really up on getting out when it's cold, and having a good time like this. These are the same people who think they can't report from a hurricane without standing outside, getting buffeted by the wind and rain. Idiots.
