HOWTO: Make an electrified steampunk Monopoly

Instructables member Antibromide modded a "Vintage Edition" Monopoly set into an electrified steampunk version, wherein your pieces' movement around the board trigger electrical effects in four props in the center. Brava!

I started with a special edition Monopoly board and added a Community Chest, a water tower (for the water company), a Ray Gun (for the Chance cards), a train (for the railroads), and street lights (for the electric company). I used reed switches and magnets for the triggers when you land on designated spots on the board.

This would have to be pretty study to survive the inevitable toss across the room that happens 30 minutes into any game of Monopoly.

sturdy not study

Although I think Monopoly is a good choice because it's a game that people actually play, another game with great steampunk possibilities would be Mousetrap.

People actually play Monopoly? That's a shame. There are so many better games available.

Thecat, I apparently didn't get the memo that said that no one is allowed to play games that you don't like, or that those who actually *like* Monopoly should be allowed to play it without someone looking down their nose at them.

My only complaint is that the train looks really flakey. She used a plastic toy set (with plastic rails), covered the rails in copper tape, and used large wires scraping on the rails as "brushes" to pick up power. Why not just go with Z-Scale model railroad parts? They'll track much better, come in steam locomotives, and have more layout flexibility. Plus I think they're actually smaller.

Hey Zan, I wish I could have used a z-scale train! The smallest z-scale train track was around 16" x 18" and the square on top of the board was only 13" sqaure. I thought about building a train around the board but I couldn't find anything that was the correct size/proportion to make that work.

Steam Punk has become so trendy that Courtney Love mentioned it one of her rambling myspace blogs the other day

A set like this one (Restoration Hardware) would be a good base for this. Their Clue set would be a cool base for a mod too.
