SeeqPod Mobile for Windows Mobile free until 12/21/2008
bOING bOING contributor and happy mutant Jim Leftwich says:
Exciting news! My friend and longtime colleague Steve Doss and I have been working 12-14 hours a day, 7 days a week non-stop (except Thanksgiving Day) to build what we think is a pretty remarkable (in many ways) new mobile app - SeeqPod Mobile for Windows Mobile.SeeqPod MobileWe wanted to get the word out that we're giving away free downloads of the app starting today (we'll start selling it for $9.95 on Monday, which is still about half of what most Windows Mobile apps cost, and this one is way cooler).
Steve and I have been collaborators for several years. I did all of the design and user experience architecture, putting everything I know about making a great product cool and easy to use. Steve's been a successful mobile app designer (he's an artist, musician, programmer, and all-around genius renaissance guy). He figured out how to do lots of things that other apps don't do on the Windows Mobile platform.
You can read a bit about the app and it's features at our mobile page, and here are some groovy screenshots.
We've built in a range of interchangeable color themes and skins, including a Steampunk skin (in honor of Boing Boing fans everywhere). The architecture allows customizability, so eventually we will have many skins available and people will be able to add to a growing collection of skins.
We also support both QVGA (320x240) and VGA (640x480) displays, which will be cool for people with the newest generation of Windows Mobile phones.

...I may not need a mobile app of any sort, but I *LOVE* that interface! And the big-ass screws are a nice pseudo-Steampunk touch!
Perhaps this is a stupid question, but what does this application do?
AHHH! Please slow down, internets!! You're going too fast! I don't know what half of the products and software out there do anymore.
@#2...you want it to *do* something? For gosh sake, it's got a steampunk skin, isn't that enough?
mark@2: It finds MP3s you search for and streams them.
Crashes on my T-Mobile Wing. I've sent an e-mail off to the support e-mail address. Hopefully they'll respond soon.
I'm with #2. I read (and re-read) the post trying to figure out what the heck it does. Seeing the ">" play button I figured it had something to do with music, but that's about it.
PS port it to the iPhone and I might be curious. Windows Mobile? I don't even know what runs it.

How different is this from Pandora?
I have no use for the program, but I'd like to hear "Andromedan Dream Of An Octaroon," which I'm presuming is somehow inspired by Captain Beefheart's "Neon Meate Dream Of A Octafish."
Well, I listened to it; it doesn't sound anything like Beefheart.

Homer: Marge, what does it do?
Marge: It doesn't do anything.
Homer: Marge, really, what does it do?
Marge: Whatever it does, it's doing it right now.

I downloaded this to my Touch Pro, gave it a runaround. Basically you enter a band name and it goes and finds anything it can about the band from Wikipedia.org and any available mp3s/streaming. It seems fairly thorough, in fact the big problem I had was that if I enter a band like Gargoyle (early 90s prog metal) you get every podcast and playlist or album that includes a song with 'gargoyle' in the name, which is pretty useless.
It also serves you up some suggested playlists like 'Top 20 Rock Albums', but it's all Top 40 crap I don't have much interest in, like Weezer - whut?
The player is nice enough (nice big keys and text, perfect for fingers), but I didn't see any way to just play mp3s off the SD card. I know, I know, a real CHILD OF THE TUBES would only play streaming downloaded stuff, but if I can't play my current crop of fave mp3s it's pretty useless to me.
This seems like the perfect app for people who love to graze at the snackbar of internet music.
Thanks Boingboing!
@Holtt: SeeqPod's iPhone site for all you iPeople out there:

Click the link in Firefox just loads a web page. Maybe there is some Safari-specific code in there, but I'm too lazy to check.
Indeed. Build it using the iPhone SDK and we'll talk.

Crikey! Imagine having the audacity to charge *actual money* for the results of their hard work! How dare they!

Thanks for the feedback! Software's an ever evolving iterative endeavor, so we'll keep working to make it better!
To answer a few questions:
1) We'd *LOVE* to make it free permanently, if we could figure out how we afford to live for free *and* spend nearly every minute of the past six months working on something like this. As it is, we think it's a pretty good value compared to other software in its class.
2) We completed and submitted a great *free* app to the iTunes store way back in August. It finds and plays not only what you're searching for, but related discoveries. And everything includes links to buy them at the iTunes Store.
We're still waiting (sound of crickets). So for all of you fans of the iPhone (and I myself have 112 apps on mine), we agree that it's an awesome device. But for some reason the gatekeeper is keeping us out. Don't blame us! We tried!
3) As for why Windows Mobile - Well, despite some of the quirks of the platform, it's still a device that is relatively open to innovation. It has a huge installed base, and as I alluded to above, darn it, we're forced to try to make some dough in order to keep our shirts on and doors open. We wanted to give the users of Windows Mobile something that would be cooler than most of the rest of the offerings out there.
4) Blackberry and Google Android gPhone are in the works. We need to catch up on our sleep though!
5) It comes with a few skins, but the architecture allows for more customizability by third parties, so there'll be both more available and people will be able to make and share their own. We thought that sounded like fun!
Enjoy and Happy Solstice!
