Heavy-duty overhead luggage with a chest of drawers and a seat

I've never tried the Zuca Pro ultraluggage, but the heavy traveler in me responds to it in an absolutely visceral way. It's got a built-in seat and internal, stacking drawer-like sub-luggages, and it fits into overheads. If only I hadn't sworn off two-wheeled luggage for four-wheeled spinners, I'd seriously consider this thing.

Ha,
You know TSA would be puzzled and overreact to it surely.

I see these all the time, only bright pink or purple with LEDs in the wheels. Little rich figure skater girls have them to store their figure skates and equipment in. I've always been jealous, till now.

These were originally designed for figure skates, as deejayqueue points out above. I've got one of the original versions that I use to carry podcasting equipment to 4-6 conferences a year, and it _rocks_. The newer one is thinner, and will fit in overhead bins, while the older doesn't have the wheels inset, and sometimes won't quite make it into the bin.

They are really, really well made though.

The organizer drawers are interesting. Seems like they would make it hard to pack actual clothes in it, since they are so small. And organizer thingies can actually increase the weight and reduce the volume available for your own stuff--even as they make it easier to find things and keep them neat.

Handy, yes, but when anything with unfamiliar metal bits is immediately classified as "bomb?" Not sure it'll save you any trouble...

Figure skaters have known about Zucas for years, haha. They are quite nice!

Those 4 wheel spinner suit cases are awesome. I like how you can push and pull them around with one finger. I like twirl mine around at the airport and mock the schlubs with the two wheel cases.

Cory, as much as you travel, what -would- you recommend if not this? What gets the C-Doc Seal of Approval?

looks affordable.

they just don't make campaign chests like they used to.

I guess I'm kind of old-fashioned in that I think if you can't carry all your stuff two miles without the aid of wheels, then you need to travel with less crap. But you know.. just my opinion, man.

Just got one and cannot wait to try it out! It's noting short of amazing.

Though i love good looking luggage and that is a fine example, i have a rule when traveling to always use a pack (as in backpack), because sooner or later, and its almost always sooner, your going to have to pick it up and carry it and at that point if you don't have straps,
well it sucks to be you.
so i'd love to see some super functional fancy backpacks i'm in need of a new one.

StratoJoe: what I would give to be able to just use one case or a backpack when I'm flying. But I have to carry tools, a computer, documents, media, and an overnight or overweek bag.

I've kept an eye open for the 'perfect' tool case for years... I found it:
http://www.portercase.com/product_info.php?products_id=61

Watch the video at the homepage.

I've had mine for a few months now. The handle/wheel geometry is perfectly balanced, I can stack boxes, bags, cases on top. And by taking the pallets out, I can use it as regular luggage. And it fits under an airplane seat. If I was able to take it into the cabin, what with all the tools in it, that is.

Have you thought much about luggage, Mr. Banks?

No.

It's the central preoccupation of my life.

for those looking for an ALMOST perfect mobile office spinner:

they are currently out-of-stock here but they can be found elsewhere for a bit more $$$

I only wish they had a side flap where you could slip a laptop into it without having to dig into the main compartment while jostling shoes, belts, coins, cell phones etc in a crowded security line!

I wish the people who designed luggage were forced to travel with it to test it out...

Cory, sticking to a silly vow is just ridiculous. It's like those dumb deathbed promises that screw the hero up. JUST SAY NO!

Take a look at this

Oh yes. Please. Anything so that people can bring MORE stuff into the airplane cabin with them. Yay.

All the figure skaters at our local ice rink use these. They also outfit them with the LED wheels and push ride them around like go carts.

This looks like a silly toy, and I can't think that I would have any use for it whatsoever.
My wife and I can live for two weeks out of this Red Oxx bag, it is a 'super functional fancy backpack.'
It comes with a dare 'Put this bag it your will. It's guarenteed forever.'
I've had alot of bags, and this might be my last one.

Plus, they employ a village in guatemala.

As others mentioned, they're big with the figure-skating crowd. The company also had booths at the last few gaming cons I attended, marketing them as the perfect way to carry all your RPG books...

They're good for swinging around at people as long as you don't torque your wrist if using the handle in the casing.

Lots of the middle school kids at my school have them.

Durable for the price and they can hold a decent amount. I don't like them though. :/

Scottsigler@8: I buy Samsonite Spinners, the four-wheel cases. We've got three, a soft-side, a semi-rigid, and a carry-on sized mini. They're fabulous -- in a pinch, I can even wheel all three while my wife carries the baby (e.g. while we're waiting for the stroller to be off-loaded).

I've always been partial to Briggs and Riley.

Not cheap, but they have an unconditional lifetime warranty.

The thing weighs 8.75 lbs? That's almost exactly half the allowed carryon on some airlines (Finnair, at least, has a 8 kg limit in economy class, 10 kg in business) -- not that they usually weigh them.

The more I travel (and I travel quite a bit) the more I dislike features in my luggage that are supposed to help me stay organized. They necessarily take up room and add weight. I want to use every cubic cm for my stuff, not "features" added by the manufacturer. I want to keep my luggage light. I'll organize it myself, thank you very much, please don't help me. Some exceptions may be made for my real carryon (by which I mean, what carryon used to be, stuff I'm actually going to use on the flight, not what it is now, luggage I don't want to check for many good and obvious reasons), because I do want to be able to keep my laptop segregated from my papers separate from my travel documents apart from my iPod.

Anyway, the suitcase I've liked the most in recent years is a Samsonite F'Lite, which they unfortunately seem to have stopped making, or at least it's not on their web site. It's about as simple as it gets -- a plastic shell, no lining, no organizer pouches or dividers. About the only creature comforts are an internal strap, and a pair of wheels. It's very light, protects and contains my stuff, and what more do you really need? It also turns out to be a great piece of dive luggage. It's hard-sided to protect my gear, not subject to water damage, wipes clean, and most important is nondescript unlike purpose-marketed dive luggage which is typically encrusted with "expensive dive equipment within, steal me!" decals and patches. As an additional bonus, it was dirt cheap.

I see the appeal of the four-wheel bags (and have owned such in the past) but I'd prefer to ditch the extra weight and volume. I am willing to compromise some in order to have the floor/ground support the weight of my bag on two wheels, instead of using my back to do it.

With that said, can anyone recommend a similarly minimalist rollaboard?

JENZEN No, I don't mind at all that you dropped that coupon offer for the free bag. I was right on the edge of getting them both, and the free backback totally sold me. Thanks! I have a big trip of nine cities in ten days coming up, and this bag looks like it's going to help me stay organized.
