Ukulele cover of Styx

I love the band Styx in a non-ironic way. That's why I was delighted to stumble upon this curious ukulele cover of Styx's "Come Sail Away" by Uke enthusiast Sirant who lives in China. He looks like quite a character.

Styx was my very first concert. Mr. Robato tour (appropriately enough). Tenth row center thanks to a family friend with "connections." It was mind-blowing.

Ironic or not, this song has been covered using the ukulele in Hawaii for years. Although they think of in a more tropical, less ufo sort of way.

What a coincidence. . . I HATE Styx in a non-ironic way.

However, I like this version OK-- he seems to have excised most of the bombast from the song. I bought an early Styx album recently, willing to give them another chance, and found the songs just sounded like Broadway show tunes with loud guitars.

The song really lends itself well to the uke!

ILL LICH @4, Yes, I can easily see how people hate them. They are rock opera. And that is not for everyone. ; )

I like Sirant's version but would prefer it without the uke.

Not me. I highly dislike bands that feature bombastic keyboards/guitar noodly duels (Styx,Kansas, to name two), fronted by whiny diva-like singer composers like Dennis DeYoung, now playing at a casino near you. And yes, I've Styx , twice, when I was too young to know better. Actually, I think I was drugged and kidnapped to the venue against my will. I will at the same time proclaim my undying affection for Yes,Rush, and Queen!

Multitasking, I listened to this lovely uke arrangement of Styx while simultaneously watching this -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdbYsoEasio&fmt=18

It was an oddly relaxing experience. Not quite Wizard of Oz to Dark Side of the Moon, but along those lines...

I don't like Styx and even thought that song was lame, but... I love this version of it. I love saying, "Heeeey, this guy is gooood." And I love the Internet (and BB) for making it possible for some strange guy, singing a somewhat strange song, on a somewhat strange instrument, while living in some strange place, to entertain the world and become famous. Somewhat strange, but great... Thanks.

This is one of the first songs I learned to play on Gutiar! It's one of the three Styx songs I like play on my 12-string...along with Crystal Ball and Suite Madame Blue...I would post a video of me doing this song, but the UN declared my singing to be prohibited by the nuclear test ban treaty.

Loved it!

But the rash was kinda scary. You may want to get some cream on that. That gold medallion must not be real gold.

"the songs just sounded like Broadway show tunes with loud guitars"

That is the most accurate description of Styx I have heard yet!

Wow. I kept waiting for it to be unbearably bad, but it was really good! Great find.

And while we're on the topic of ukulele tunes, may I present the Legend of Zelda:

Wait, does enjoying Styx count as New Sincerity? What about enjoying a ukulele cover of a Styx song? I'm so confused about where and how I should feel sarcastic or ironic about this.

And, Booticon, while we're on the topic of the Legend of Zelda, may I present Super Mario Brothers (Level 1) by James Hill!

Wow, glad everyone liked it. Should see my better ones, I kinda thought this one sucked myself...

At the risk of sounding like a jerk nay-sayer AND a suck-up at the same time: I'm going to have to agree with Sirant. I didn't care for this one, and found it kinda boring. And I love Styx, have seen them 3 times, once with Dennis and twice without.

I love Styx. They would make these perfect little pop songs, the aural equivalent of an airbrushed van painting, and not waste a note--you want over-the-top endless bombast, try just about anything by Jim Steinman, almost all of whose songs go on for long enough that you start to get fidgety about halfway through. Styx also had a bit of self-deprecating humor; witness the coda to "I'm Okay", where the chorus starts to fake the words about halfway through. They age a lot better than REO Speedwagon, at any rate.

my first rock concert was with david in 2000 - we saw styx reunited in SF!!! dennis de young was replaced by a professional de young impersonator from canada - he was awesome! tommy shaw was still sexy. love you david! this version was about what i expected. my mom plays folk music, so i knew what was coming. i love styx because of the keyboards, so i was waiting to hear what he'd do for that awesome synth solo... cop out. but i guess strumming the base chords while letting us imagine the perfect synth in our minds was the respectful thing to do. ;) the whole "alien theme" is about as tagged on as john lennon lyrics about strawberry custard lipnis test shirts, but whatever this guys needs to tell himself to get through the song... thanks!

Wow, now that's setting the bar pretty low!
