New Report: CIA lied about missionary plane shot down over Peru
The CIA Inspector General John Helgerson just issued a damning report that says the CIA lied about and covered up its involvement in a drug interception program with the Peruvian Airport. In 2001 the Peruvian Air Force used information the CIA gave them to shoot down a small plane loaded with US missionaries, causing the death of Veronica Bowers and her infant daughter Charity.
My prediction: no senior-level member of the CIA will be fired, punished, or imprisoned because of this. For one thing, they're untouchable. For another, the CIA needs all the people they have to run their own drug operations.

My prediction: the Well-named DOOFUS and poorly-named MAGE will die scared and alone at the end of a pointless life.
Also, that the only reason they gave the unhappy death of a mother and child even a moment's thought is that the new appeared an a 'liberal' website.
appalling how those above automatically think an infant a "christian".
Let's just say that sweeping mischaracterizations regarding sweeping mischaracterizations won't solve the problem.
The advantage of being Christian is a lack of the fear of death. Also, Paul warned us that if we are on the right track, we would be persecuted.

Hate the religion, not the religious.
My prediction is that Fox News will run this because:
1. Christians died vs...
2. The CIA got it wrong
...remember that they sided with the White House in the Plame case.
Pre-election, CNN would have ignored this completely, but now that there's a gaping hole where their election ratings used to be, it's a toss up there too.
I have been a loyal boingboing reader for years, and I am Catholic. I didn't realize that I wasn't supposed to care about human life. Thanks alot, Mage, for your wonderful insight. You're such a positive side to this story. How did you get so F$*@ing talented at Life??
this thread could either concern itself with all the wonderful things the christians brought to the Indians - along with the Conquistadores - or it can be about CIA coke smuggling and complicity in murder. Choose.
Who cares what they were? They died needlessly.
I'd prefer it was about Coke smuggling and murder. I'm not entirely clear on how the fact that the murdered people were missionaries, Christian ones that is, makes them any less or more human than anyone else.
Oh, and those of us who followed this story back in '01 already knew the CIA was complicit. This is just governmental agreement with facts that anyone who cared enough to research the story already knew.
-abs hates the drug war more than he dislikes Christians, initially he wanted to claim that it was "by a long shot" but after thinking about his born-again brother and how much of a 'phobe he is he's not quite sure it's that long of a shot any more
The CIA lied, what a surprise.
Always easy to spot 'em, the love always shines through.
I will put this thread in my prayers. Insightful as always Takuan.
@THEMAGE
You want me to build a lifelike android to replace the lost love of my life? I'll get right on that!
Isn't it supposed to read "..the CIA gave them permission to shoot down a small plane.."
hate the persecution complex, love the good works.
#6 "The advantage of being Christian is a lack of the fear of death."
Could be said of one or two muslim suicide bombers too. Or willing participants in Sati. Or any number of other proponents of popular excuses.
There's a lot of christians worldwide, on the other hand, who don't want to disrespectfuly throw away the life they believe God gave 'em.
Or gave others.
#7 "Hate the religion, not the religious."
There's a good case for the reverse, too, though there's a certain amount of irony in stating either case whilst being saddened - nay, angered, by the (pointless? Criminal?) death of a missionary.
Jupiter6,
You are the exception that proves the rule. In case you didn't notice, I never used the word "all" or "most" BB users.
chillax...
anyone read this, any good?

mage, your the fool who proves the drool. I'm UU, don't believe in any of your self righteous intolerant hate, and that child never belonged in what is essentially a war zone. Her parents had a choice, but they got their innocent child killed. She never got to make a choice to be christian or a martyr in a drug war.
New report? CIA lied?
Look closely you can always spot when someone is telling a lie, their lips move.
Maybe instead of firing the guilty CIA "people," we could just give them Medals of Freedom; after all, that's the USA's new badge of shame (Tenet, Greenspan, etc.)
I can't say I'm surprised that they were caught lying about it, or that they waited until the lame-duck end of the Bush Administration to release their reports - shooting down missionaries was intensely embarassing to the Bushies, since it's their base (even though they were actually American Baptists, not Southern Baptists.) Traditionally missionary-support pilots do a lot of low flying over jungle areas, and they're the only source of western medicine and mail for people in those areas. The CIA claimed the Peruvians had attempted to hail the pilot by radio, but got no response (not surprising, since they were only using military radio channels, not civilian ones.)
Think about what this means even if they had been actual drug dealers and the CIA had told the truth. Arresting such people is one thing - this was shooting a plane out of the air and machinegunning the people who were escaping the plane after it crashed, no warning, no trial, no questions about whether all the passengers were guilty, no attempt to arrest the survivors, just pure extrajudicial execution. Is that something Americans should even be tolerating in the world, much less assisting?

So, why did the Peruvian Air Force shoot down a small plane loaded with US missionaries? Were the missionaries some how involved in drug trafficking? An explanation other than - "cause they're idiots," or something similar - a summary please. -Thanks

That's the same link as above - I figured there had to be more to it than "The CIA made a mistake and tried to cover it up." Thanks anyway

I'm not surprised that the CIA tried to cover up such a horrible mistake. I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't a mistake.
I didn't read the article before I made that post - I just read the comments and figured there had to be more to it than that. Just reading the comments I assumed it also had something to do with religion.

Ignore my last post, or preferably, remove it. I have a few windows open, set to auto refresh and somehow posted on the wrong subject.
And delete this one also plz - thx
I think that I'm actually kind of OK with the CIA shooting down missionaries
OBDAN, please remember to hit the godless members only post button the next time;)
When will we hear the truth about TWA flight 800?
"I think that I'm actually kind of OK with the CIA shooting down missionaries" Really? ..
I think I would rather live next door to Christian missionaries than someone like OBDAN.
Isn't lying a job requirement at the CIA?
"advantage of being Christian is a lack of the fear of death"
Why should anyone fear death? Because of manipulative fables of heaven and hell?
To be born is to die.
To be scared of dying is to be afraid of life.
"Life is a short warm moment. Death is a long cold rest." P. Floyd
They fear god. Everything they do is based on fear. They put up a brave front, but the anger, hate, and threats in response to the comments of non-believers belies the insecurity and fear in their hearts.
Because their god is a dualistic god, whose provenance lies in the dualistic minds of men. Why is their god no different than the men who created this myth? This god of love and hate, both brave and fearful, accepting and intolerant, filled at once with compassion and vengeance. This god that is so fearful of non-believers that he would punish for all eternity the faithless. This dualism proves the man made nature of the myth.
Their god is nothing more than the limited vision of the universe as seen from a desert 6,000 years ago. Their bible reflects no more insight or truth than that of any man of that time.
It takes as much faith to NOT believe in God as it does to believe in God.
Have faith not in the god who at best is but a creation of our dualistic universe or is in the least the creation of dualistic men, containing the limits of their perception and all their foibles. No, if you would believe in a god, find the god of the singularity, the god that existed before and independent of this universe, the god of the nameless void.
The god you seek will transcend the perception and emotions of the men who created these ancient myths. Find the god that exists without love or vengeance, and inspires only compassion. Take back that which is rightfully yours, take back the miracle from those that would rob you of your beauty, and demand you prostrate yourself before your own imagination.
foetusnail FTMFW!
BTW, if you are thinking about smuggling cocaine from south america, DON'T! the CIA hates competition.
Thanks minTphresh, while these statements are nothing more than a limited vision of the universe as seen through the Hubble Space Telescope, and reflect no more insight or truth than that of any man, woman, or child of these times, it is comforting and affirming to have someone with which to share the view. It’s fucking beautiful isn’t it!?!
(Wouldn't it be interesting to know what they think of us in another 6,000 years.)
TheMage @6:
However, Paul never said that if you were persecuted, you were guaranteed to be on the right track.Jupiter6 @9:
Pax vobiscum. Now chill.Takuan @10, that was perfect.
Foetusnail @21, if I'd come across that comment unattributed, I wouldn't have guessed you wrote it. Why all the bile? If they'd had any idea they'd get shot down, they'd never have made the flight in the first place.
Tom Hale @26:
There's a possible answer in Bill Stewart's observation two messages back:Bill Stewart @24:
Bill's right: that isn't how you behave if you're engaged in law enforcement. I'll add what I think is an obvious implication: that is how you behave if you're engaged in the drug trade, and you believe the people in the plane are competing with you. It's been known for a long time that the CIA is in the drug trade. When we finally get the moral gumption to go after that, it's going to be a hellacious mess to clean up.
Teresa, I admire and envy your ability to call someone out, while at the same time leaving them feeling like they have been complimented. This is one reason for your success, you're smart and nice.
I just don't like the way children are never given a chance to decide for themselves before these beliefs are put into their heads. You're probably right, but her parents made a choice to get on a small plane in a drug war zone, with their child, who didn't get to choose.
I have read the link you posted recently to your post on Making Light, so I understand your religious views to some degree, but did I not earn back a little bit of respect with my later posts at 40 and the secret number 42?
