Alberta Meteor Sighting
Last night, there was a report of a meteor streaking across the Alberta sky and crashing somewhere in Western Canada in the early evening. Sadly I did not see it but some local TV coverage can be found on YouTube.
There's a Canadian scientific website for reporting meteor sightings and impacts but it's mum on last night's event.

I for one welcome our alien snow snake overloads.
Of course, to be pedantic or accurate, if it struck the ground then it was not a meteor but a meteorite.
One of the videos seems to show several smaller burning pieces after the big flash.

The stream of pieces reminds me of the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 collision with Jupiter.
I think we found NASA's missing toolbag.
Some more angles
Ah, good old Lloyd Robertson!
TRR, I can be even more pedantic: It's more properly called a fireball if it's a meteor that appears brighter than any of the planets.
> Of course, to be pedantic or accurate, if it struck the ground then it was not a meteor but a meteorite.
It was a meteor (streak of light, a phenomenon in the sky) when people saw it in the sky. If they find any pieces on the ground, those will be meteorites. It space, it was a meteoroid.
They follow the continuing stock market crash "story" with a photo (behind Lloyd Robertson) of what appears to be meteor 10 times the size of the moon crashing to the Earth. When will they stop this? Don't we have enough to worry about?
And we can all remember this with the help of Joanna Newsom:
That the meteorite is a source of the light
And the meteor's just what we see
And the meteoroid is a stone that's devoid of the fire that propelled it to thee
And the meteorite's just what causes the light
And the meteor's how it's perceived
And the meteoroid's a bone thrown from the void that lies quiet in offering to thee
(From "Emily.")
@#6 mdh: "I think we found NASA's missing toolbag."
Dang, you beat me to it!
I'm glad BoingBoing posts stuff like this, because its probably the coolest thing I've seen all week. Also, it reminds me of a previous BoingBoing post I suggested, where a news chopper captured the reentry of a failed Russian rocket: http://www.boingboing.net/2007/01/04/space-junk-fireball-.html
The link to the video appear to be borked, so here it is again: http://www.myfoxcolorado.com/myfox/pages/News/Detail?contentId=1962661&version=1&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=TSTY&pageId=3.2.1

#6, maybe we found NASA's missing spider. :(
"Then came the night the first missile approached Earth. It was thought to be an ordinary falling star,..."
Hot Fudge Sundae fell on a Friday this week?

Bravo!!

I think I grew up with a placemat that illustrated the difference between the three states. Since back in the day, space was the place. Major Matt Mason!
I've often wondered what I would do if I saw a very large fireball descending. Sort of a fast version of suddenly seeing the full moon turn bright.
#18- Damn EDZ that was the first thing I thought (except it fell on Thursday, the 20th, not today...).
Not too many fellow LH fans hereabouts...
Wow! Finally one of those security surveillance cameras has made itself useful!
So when does John Travolta get savant abilities?
#'s 18 and 21 - I was just telling my wife about LH a few days ago, since she's feeling a little apocalyptic about the world financial meltdown.
I said at least we aren't being destroyed by a large asteroid. Maybe I spoke too soon!
Just wait around for a while and you might get your chance Takuan. It's possible there will be a much bigger show in 2029 when Apophis is scheduled to stop by and say hello. (skip forward to chapter 12)
You won't see it coming though as it will be traveling faster than the speed of sound. Which is probably just as well since it's the size of the Rose Bowl.
