Text-adventure game award-winners of 2008: Everybody Dies takes bronze!
Writer/game designer/film-maker Jim Munroe sez,
Congrats, Jim!
IFComp 2008, The 14th Annual Interactive Fiction Competition and keeper of the old-school text-game torch, recently declared its winners. Bronze went to my game, Everybody Dies, silver went to Eric Eve's Nightfall, and the gold went to Jeremy Freese's Violet.Everybody Dies puts you in the shoes of a chubby metalhead who has smoked his last smoke, with illustrations by Michael Cho; Nightfall drops you into a mysterious city where everyone's fled before the approaching Enemy; and in Violet your struggle to write your dissertation is aided by the most charming voice-in-your-head character in history.
All 35 of the comp entries, playable with interpreters, are available at ifcomp.org, but Violet and Everybody Dies can be played online

Does anyone know what's the best way to play this on Ubuntu? It seems Glulxe can't do graphics?
Curse you, Cory! I ended up procrastinating over my Ph.D. by playing a text game where the goal was to avoid doing just that!
(It was a worthy winner, though.)
I went to the violet site, but all I get is 3 sentences. No options, nothing to do. Is it not playable for Linux users?
#4: Rodney, it works for me in Linux, using FF. The trick is to hit enter, then again when the story unfolds. You'll see a prompt. ;)
#2: The easiest way to play Everybody Dies on Ubuntu (which, incidentally, I wrote it on) is to click the Java link. There's also a link to a standalone Gargoyle interpreter (patched to run the latest Glulx files), but on my installation it requires you to run it from the commandline for some reason. I do prefer the standalone as it renders the fonts nicer.
Thanks for trying out the games. I have also started to add hints to the comments section on my site, if that's of interest to folks here, and corrected a link to the Windows interpreter to one that actually works.
..i can't even get past the first challenge.. college iz makin me stoopid :(
No, really:
heeeelp meee!
/cry
Kieran, thanks!
So*.
Turns out I'm not a dummy. Also turns out I'm not very patient/observant.
I should get that fixed.
Thanks Jim!
*careful, here there be spoilers.
Hurrah! Now if only I had the time to play them... but I've socked them away for later glee.
Srsly, I wish the IF community was more active. I think people only ever come out for the comps.
