Attempted suicide on Brazilian exchange floor
Unlike Sad Guys On Trading Floors, this is no laughing matter. A trader on the floor of Sao Paulo's Bovespa stock exchange shot himself in the chest. According to the Associated Press, Paulo Sergio Silva's condition is not known. From the AP:
It was not clear if he shot himself due to the recent sharp losses in Brazilian stocks or for other reasons."Trader shoots himself on stock exchange floor"
Trading was halted for a few minutes after the shot was fired on Monday.

'halted for a few minutes'? Classy crowd he ran with.
Yeowch.
#1: If the market pauses for more than a few minutes, there's a heck of a lot of impact on the economy. Unless you want to let him have terrorist-like impact, resuming trading is the only thing you can do.
My question: Was he at least courteous enough to make sure nobody was behind him when he pulled the trigger? A body may not be enough to stop a bullet, and riccochets off bones can be unpredictable.
I agree technogeek, the market is juggernaut.
Note to self: don't go to Sao Paulo's Bovespa stock exchange floor, they apparently allow weapons.
"or for other reasons" -
A guy shoots himself on an active exchange floor during a massive economic crisis and we wonder why he did it? I'm pretty sure it was market-related.
He may have other psychological issues, but you can bet he had stocks or pork bellies on his mind.
#6 - assumptions like that make you a very bad investigator. Yes, it's a DAMNED LIKELY cause, but jumping to conclusions and not investigating because you think it's a "sure bet" means that you could be barking up the wrong tree. If the Times doesn't hedge its words, it could theoretically get sued by someone upset by the misrepresentation.
It's in their best interests to note that the investigation is still open (or wait 24 hours until they conclude that yeah, he did it because of the market, duh, but newspapers don't like to wait these days).
I'm sure many of you heard about this recent gun tragedy. I mean, economic downturn tragedy. Good thing folks in my neck of the woods are stocking up at Cabella's. Yee haw!

#5 The São Paulo police are conducting an investigation do determine how he was able to enter the stock exchange carrying a weapon.
Jerril: Next time, please say something everyone doesn't know.
You know, I kept waiting for something like this to happen here. After all, weren't brokers flinging themselves from buildings during the 29 crash? It has to be pretty mind blowing to be in commodities trading, in danger of losing everything and your job, only to realize your only skills involve an industry that is going down in flames.
#10 Theresa - My apologies. The comment pushed a button. I'll work harder to make sure my molly-guards are in place next time.
