Kramers Ergot No. 7

Alvinwithergot

I snapped this photo of publisher Alvin Buenaventura holding a copy of the latest issue of Kramers Ergot, a brobdignian anthology of comic book art by cartoonist luminaries at the top of their game. Opening the book and being treated to 32" x 42" spreads is mind-bendingly fun. This is the way all comic books should be made.

Kramers Ergot, the most influential and acclaimed anthology of the past decade, returns in its seventh volume as a gigantic full-color 16 x 21 inch (that’s bigger than a full page from your daily newspaper) hardcover! While past issues explored an innovative blend of art and comics, this collection focuses on expanding the boundaries of the narrative comics page. #7’s massive page size has given these contemporary artists an opportunity to tell stories at a scope not seen since the expansive Sunday newspaper comics of the early twentieth century. Including over 50 of the world’s greatest cartoonists, it draws on the talents of established cartoonists, newcomers, elegant stylists, and unpredictable innovators such as Al Columbia, Carol Tyler, Chris Ware, Paper Rad, Jaime Hernandez, Blanquet, Daniel Clowes, Mat Brinkman, Kim Deitch, Anna Sommer, Anders Nilsen, C.F., Adrian Tomine, Joost Swarte and many others.

How old is Alvin? He looks like 12 yrs old kid to me.

I really, really want that...but the price is too steep for me. I'm a big fan of Sammy Harkham's previous work (ever since I first read him in The Best American Non-required Reading a few years ago), so maybe if I can find it super-duper cheap in the future I'll pick it up.

$78.75, if you're interested.

$78.75 that's cheaper than the tip gave out by the boss of tallkiss.com, on a banquet in London

I caught a look at it while visiting APE a few weekends back.

Absolutely gorgeous, and many folks were drooling over it.

That Amazon price is a smidge less prohibitive than the $125 list, but still, it gives one pause.

- - And how / where exactly does one store the thrilling thing?

I think the word you're looking for is brobdingnagian. (And this collection? Most certainly is.)

i think i'd give alvin a hug. he seems like a cool dude.

this seems really neat though. between this and the lore premiere edition i've been eyeing, i'd be down in the over 100 dollar range in comics. quite too much for me now.

I'm with vonnegutlives; I've bought my share of graphic novel hardcovers, but for freaks' sake, you can buy several of the previous volumes in the series for that price.

I love Kramer's Ergot. Sammy H.'s brainchild not only consistently showcases the best emerging talent, it pushes the boundaries of the medium.

Having said that, I'll wait for the portable (and hopefully more-affordable) edition to come out. I appreciate the format very much, but I don't need another dust-collecting over-sized art book. My "Quimby the Mouse" and "Storeyville" look kind of sad sitting sideways on my shelf collecting dust above the other books that I can curl up with any old time.

just to let you know that the print run of this baby is really low (3,500 copies) and it would seem very unlikely that it will be reprinted. I have the feeling the new Kramer's Ergot will sell out in a couple of months, after which ebay sharks will be asking huge sums for a shrinkwrapped copy. So get them cheap while you can. And less then 80 $ is dirt cheap for such a book
