My pal Jeff Cross sent me this link to fantastic photos of Swedish dance bands from the 1970s. As Jeff says, "This (reveals) what's wrong with music today... not enough costumes." Swedish Dance Bands From the 70's
I'm in the market for a new MP3 player -- my second-gen iPod Nano is finally dead, and I don't want to buy another iPod, or any other player with DRM built in. I figure that any company that wants to devote its engineers to figuring out how to frustrate my desires doesn't really want my business. W... More.
Yesterday morning, I had the pleasure of taking the 2010 Tesla Roadster Sport out on the town in Menlo Park, California. It's the latest from the eco-friendly, Silicon Valley-based super-fast all-electric-car company started by PayPal co-founder Elon Musk. I can't really afford one in my everyday ... More.
A British corporate law firm has created a new unit that will help easily offended corporate giants track down and sue anonymous Internet forum posters. They will also target whistle-blowers. Skeptics who believe that a university is actually a diploma mill often prove their point by enrolling their cats in the university's program and seeing whether the cat can get a degree. Some enterprising Wikipedians have assembled a list of several such cats. Colby Nolan is a housecat who was aw... More.
Master haunt modeller Ray Keim sez, "After a little bit of experimentation and a lot of patience, I figured out how to carve Putka Pods [ed: small, pumpkin-like dried seeds] into extremely tiny jack-o-lanterns!" The Hives (also from Sweden) are still dressing up today --

These pics might have just won the Intarwebs.
Quite the genetic bouillabaisse there.
Very kewl. Reminds me of this Ponytone post.

Apparently, according to lore, part of the reason for the, er, interesting costumes was Swedish tax law. Bands could deduct the cost of the costumes, but only in so far as they were "fantasy costumes", with the criteria being that they couldn't conceivably be worn outside of the stage context.

Evan,
Your URL can go on your profile page. Second warning.

There must have been some sort of radiological accident in that part of the world in the '50s.
I was a kid in the 70s. Dance Bands where really big. A lot of people played in dance bands and every Swede knew people from at least 20 or so different bands. And all of these bands where out playing most weekends.
The movement divided the population in three fractions: people who actually listened to dance band music as well as danced (a minority); people who danced to dance band music, but wouldn't stand listening to it if they weren't dancing (the majority); people who didn't dance nor listened and got a regurgitating reflex everytime they heard it (a rather big minority).
Swedish dance band music is still one of our biggest exports to Norway. God knows why. Sweden, by the way, is the second biggest music exporter in the world after USA, not bad for a country with only 9 million people. The Dance Band movement where the incubator of the Swedish music industry.

Not all of the pictures are from the 70s though.
#10, maybe eastward water flows from here?
The "Schytts" were well known for their use of "the brown note."
Something tells me this band didn't get the costume tax writeoff...

Hux Flux is a current Psy-Trance group, and they're also Swedish. As far as I know, they were not around in the 1970s.
Perhaps there is some sort of Swedish dance band apostolic succession going on here?
The sheer awesomeness of these pictures cannot be conveyed. I stand in awe.
Was the URL MaleSwedishCameltoeFromThe1970s.com already taken?

#18: Nope. Your mission is clear.
Oh yeah, absolutely. . . if (fill-in-the-blank-crappy-modern-band) suddenly started wearing costumes, their music would immediately improve one hundred fold, and you could actually HEAR the costumes in their recordings!
(if only)
My favorite band is the Shytts. They're totally dreamy! I'm really into Bjaroern... he's the least retarded one!
I swear my mom sent me to school for Picture Day in a couple of those outfits.
Being a Swede myself I can only say WE RULEZ THE INTERNETS
...And we thought ABBA was just a singular anomaly from a country where gender changing is a cottage industry :-P
And here's even more svenska glam:

Re port #11...
Concidering the Pirate Bay is swedish I'd say Sweden is the #1 music exporter in the world...

Somehow, this goes a long way toward explaining Black Metal bands.
I have never seen a band more appropriately named then Hick.
More thoughts:
1. I think "Bob Candys" is slang for part of the male anatomy.
2. A band from Scandinavia called "The Scandinavians"-- who'd a thunk it?
3. Now that digital cameras are ubiquitous, will that spell the end of "old photos" resurfacing? In other words, will embarrassing black-metal/goth band digital photos of 2008 survive on old hard drives or in the netherworld of the internet to be viewed with hilarity and derision 20 years from now? Which medium is more ephemeral, digital or paper photos?
I win.
I saw that link like eight years ago.
Garvis!
As a name, "Hux Flux" could parody "Ku Klux."
I like their complete uncertainty about the use of the apostrophe.
Will embarrassing blackmetal/goth .... survive on .... the netherworld of the internet .... ?

Reminds me of the infamous Danish 'Apache' cover (by Tommy Seebach).
Now that everyone has laughed at the Swedes, here's something for the Swedes to laugh at:

Michael A. Banks @ 32:
"Hux flux" is a Swedish idiom, meaning something like "all of a sudden", "out of the blue" or "lickety split".

I'm a fan of Sweetshots (http://sweetshots.se/). They're more country than dance band but they're going to win the Swedish TV's 2009 dance-band competition. Mark my words! -- Lord Odin
