Pata PAta never fails to make me smile. I'm glad she was still performing at least. What a loss...
A very very sad day.... As a white South African I can only say : Aluta Continua
Much saddened to hear this. But at least she leaves us her joyous music. Thankyou Miriam.
Hamba kahle, Mama. Hope you're smiling down at us from the big stage up in the sky.
I would like to mention that she was performing in a show against the mafia organized by Mr Roberto Saviano.
Roberto Saviano is well known because he wrote a book about the Naples Mafia (camorra), he lives now at some secret Police station and is always followed by some undercover cops. There was a report that the mob wants him dead by Christmas this year.
Anyway, he was nice of her to join this event.
Rust in peace.
I obviously meant rest in peace. Sorry for my broken English, I am Italian.
rest in peace.
I'm 23, and I remember first seeing and hearing Miriam Makeba in a Cosby Show episode when I was tiny. What a voice!, I thought. She was lovely.
Rest in peace, Mama Afrika.
I think you english is OK, Plagio.
"Pata Pata" is widely known in SouthAmerica. The punk/reggae band Todos Tus Muertos paid homage to Makeba in the intro of their song "Hijo Nuestro".

r.i.p. Miriam Makeba
I first learned of Miriam when I was about ten years old by watching "The Cosby Show."
An enormous talent with a beautiful voice and a smile to match, she will not soon be forgotten.
Thanks for the music Mama!
Collapsed as she was leaving the stage at 76, perfect. We should all be so lucky as to go out after a long life, well lived, with the sound of our adoring fans applauding our efforts. Congratulations Miriam , a complete success, rest in peace.

Miriam's U.S. career was ruined because her husband was politically active.
"Her marriage to Trinidadian civil rights activist and Black Panthers leader Stokely Carmichael in 1968 caused controversy in the United States, and her record deals and tours were cancelled." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miriam_Makeba
This is how we "reward" artists and those who speak out against racism.
Bless you, Miriam, and rest in peace. Your voice and charm will live on.
@10, Biscuit4 - What?
This is great loss for the world, and it's great to see so many express gratitude for all she did.
I taught elementary school music about ten years ago, and used Miriam's song "Dubula" to teach a lesson on form. I think my mother found the sheet music in the library for me for the lesson. I remembered that lesson today and started to cry. I also remember dancing like a lion with my mother to another song, I forget which. My parents shared her music with me and I with my students. Makeba's music is like a thread through my life. Go in peace, Mama.
Wow, such sad news.
RIP Mama Africa, you will always live in my heart!
