From Scott Beale's Laughing Squid blog: "Obama for America campaign photographer David Katz shot some wonderful behind the scenes photos of Barack Obama, Joe Biden and their families watching the election results come in from their hotel room in Chicago." These photos really capture how bitter-sweet that day must have been for him and his family. They were still in mourning for the recent death of his grandmother, the woman who essentially raised him, and would have been most proud to see this night.

Congrats to Obama! I wish him all the best. Check out this lovely little musical letter to our new president elect:

What an awesome view of election night -

Props to Obama for releasing all of his flickr photos under a Creative Commons license.

These are a great set of photos. I'm wondering though, why are they watching the election results from a hotel room in Chicago? Doesn't the Obama family live in Chicago?

why are they watching the election results from a hotel room in Chicago?

Because their spare bedroom isn't big enough for 3500 media people with their equipment.

Wonderfully candid, sure. Got the date wrong, though.

why are they watching the election results from a hotel room in Chicago?

Because they live in Hyde Park, a Chicago neighborhood about 7 miles south of the rally- or about a 20 minute drive in perfect conditions. The hotel is the Hyatt, directly across the street from Grant Park.

What if they're really small media people?

He looks so calm, even too calm. I can't tell if the photo set is in chronological order?

Beautiful. The pictures of the whole family striding out onto the stage puts a lump in my throat. They look so wonderful. Good luck guys!

The only one not smiling -- until he has to, for a photo op -- is Obama himself.

That's a man focused on a job, with the weight of the whole world on his shoulders right now.

the shots of him watching mccain's concession speech are incredible. he wasn't gleeful, or gloating, or mocking, he was focused and sincerely listening... that says so much about the respect he has for mccain and what mccain was experiencing at that moment. it had to be hard to give, and barack knew it, because he probably had his own concession speech worked out, just in case.

that being said, i'm so damn proud to be an american this week. fist bumps all around!

Anyone else notice the fist pump? The first thing he does after the teevee flashes the news, if the photos are chronological, is fist pump his daughter.

Hell yeah.

I smell a meme replacement for "Bush making women and bald men uncomfortable with inappropriate physical contact": "Obama Fist-Pumps".

And yes, I can smell memes.

That's me on the list of contacts for at least a year. It's been great to see these behind the scenes shots that have been continually posted for the entire campaign at the least.

Thank you for the link to the Flickr set.
BBC News posted a few of these pictures today and said that they came from Flickr, but they didn't provide any link! FAIL

Actually, I expected the photos to be interesting, but they're not. It isn't Obama's fault that they don't meet my expectations. Pictures of people watching television in a hotel room seldom rise beyond the yawn level.

#24 Menlo Bob:

That's exactly what's so amazing. Weren't you expecting jumping, cheering, champagne?

The focus of this man is simple incredible.

Ok, while I really appreciate getting to see these candid shots, am I the only one to notice that the quality of the photos looks like they were shot on a cruddy camera phone? But I look at the details and the guy (yes, Obama's personal assistant/photographer) was shooting with a Canon 5D. He locked the ISO at 400. Geeeez. The 5D has way-decent high-ISO capabilities. If he shot at 1600, or even 800, he would've gotten *much* sharper shots instead of the amateurish blur that makes the photos look like they came out of a phone. :-/

So I had one of my Flickr images favorite-ed by a guy and I went to check out his images (which were very nice) and noticed that one of his contacts was Barack Obama. I checked out Obama's Flickr images and decided to make Obama one of my contacts.

The next day I had over 3700 views on my Flickr images. Over the next few days, over 5000 views.

I want that job in the Secret Service.
