Xeni at Web 2.0 Wed 11/4 in SF: Future of Online Video Panel

I don't usually blog about conference stuff I'm doing, but this one's going to be special. I've been looking forward to it for weeks.

Tomorrow at the Web 2.0 Summit, helmed by Tim O'Reilly and BB's own "band manager" John Battelle, I'll be hosting a panel about the future of online video. It's something I've been thinking about, and working on, every single day since we launched Boing Boing tv a year ago.

I am honored to welcome the following esteemed guests on this panel: Timothy Shey (Next New Networks), David Prager (Revision3), Robin Sloan (Current), Greg Goodfried (EQAL), Miles Beckett (EQAL), and Andrew Baron (Rocketboom). I'm really jazzed about the workshop, and the material people are going to share. If you're in town and thinking of coming to Web 2.0, I hope (a) this will convince you to come to the event, and (b) you'll stop by at 1130 for this panel.

I can't believe it's been over a year since the redesign and the launch of BBtv and BBGadgets. I'm getting old!

I hope your questioning the 'user generated content' buzz. Lot of sites are becoming more and more useless since any 'weirdo' posts, flames, spams it with even unrelated content.

At the panel, if possible, please consider & discuss video accessibility.

I'm a deaf software engineer & I need subtitles/captions to follow videos on e.g YouTube or CBT material otherwise I can see the video and hear the audio, but not understand what is being said :(

This is *so* frustrating for me & deaf friends who also work in IT.

More progress needs to be made on:

1) automated creation of closed captions / subtitles (yes, I'm aware of the technical issues here)
2) other approaches to improving media accessibility
3) better publicity / awareness of why media accessibility is vital & what this can bring to both content creators and consumers.

I wish I could attend this panel, but I can't so I really look forward to reading a report about what was discussed etc at this panel. Hopefully this will be a future post on BoingBoing?

Also, I would like the nationalization of online video to be addressed. 90% of online video I wish to buy and/or stream is US only. The www in a URL stands for WORLD WIDE web, not US only web.

As a Canadian, I cannot use Hulu, Joost, ABC.com, NBC.com (etc.), Netflix, Amazon, to watch video. Even purchasing video is more difficult, with very little good content on iTunes, and no Zune marketplace.

For most things, my two options are wait for the DVD release, or piracy. I'd love to pay for video content, but don't block the world from viewing it, then complain when we pirate it.
