Fleet Street Scandal artwork

Images Store 112 Large1 Yesterday, I spent the afternoon at the annual Alternative Press Expo 2008 in San Francisco. My roots (and Boing Boing's) are in the 'zine scene, so I'm always happy to see that the DIY media spirit still thrives on paper. I picked up quite a few cool items, but my favorite is this fantastic signed print by Kevin Dart of Fleet Street Scandal. Dart and his partner Chris Turnham are masters at faux movie posters and characters all digitally rendered in a hyperreal 1960s style. It was very difficult to pick just one signed print, especially when they're attractively priced at $20-$40. Every single piece is fantastic.

Nice image. Really reminds me of a picture I drew when I was sixteen in 1987.

Hear, hear!

Kevin Dart is the bomb. APE was really enjoyable this year. I went on Saturday and the sound of the pounding rain on the skylights lent a great atmosphere to meandering around looking at all the cool shit.

I especially appreciate that you can buy a full-on cocktail at the bar so you can imbibe while you browse.

In addition to Kevin,a couple of other standouts included Jeremy Tinder was showing some great work as well as an artist named Joey Chou. I thought it was a stronger show than last year's & really had a great time.

Yep. I went on Saturday too. The crowd was a bit smaller than last year but that is probably due to the weather and the date change from Spring to Fall.

This is one of my favorite events of the year. There is a fantastic range of artists. From established professionals to some amazing, bright new talent. A friend of mine had Chris Ware sign several of his New Yorker covers. Everyone is very friendly and approachable.

Wednesday Kirwan had several small original painting in frames that were just irresistible!

My only complaint: More things I wanted to buy than I had money to spend.

These are awesome, I can't believe that some of them are only going for $20.
