Why are zombies the hot monsters right now? There's been a real zombie renaissance in popular culture these last few years (in film, games, literature, urban "zombie walks", etc, etc). Is it a post-9/11 thing?
PS @ #3 MESROP:
Thanks for linking the free vectors that this decal uses. Now I can make my own zombie stencils!
I so want those! And, I have no idea why Zombies are making such a stir? Personally, I just love the idea of the walking dead, and how they defy nature by pushing up from the grave. Creepy stuff!
Urrggh arrgh.
Urg.
Aaarrrgh!
Ah.

I think western culture sees zombies as metaphor for the worst qualities of consumerism.
I got the picture after watching the first "Dawn of the Dead" where the dead people wander aimlessly around the mall.
Also, zombie films bring up old fears of being preyed upon.
As a side note, I believe Slavoj Zizek wrote a piece connecting the shame of Abu Ghraib with the spate of teen torture flicks that came out a few years ago; young Americans getting tortured instead of doing the torturing.
Nosehat, I dunno, but we got Shaun of the Dead out of it. I'm happy ;-)
You could make these at home really easily. All you need is a good template in your desired size, and black contact paper. It's easy - just use your braaaiiiinnnnsss.
These are awesome wall decals, I just don't know how this is going to fit in with the rest of my furniture in my living room, haha. And I too am wondering how the zombies took over on being the "hip" monster right now.

Did they ever really die, in the first place?
Zombies have always been where it is at in horror!
Anthony, Night of the Living Dead was the first and it was in a grave yard.
- there was no shopping. But plenty of good eats!
Zombies are unique as a movie/fiction monster in that one of them isn't really a big deal - it's the mob that's scary. Most monsters, there's one, or possibly a few of them, and they're superhuman. A vampire, a werewolf, a giant snake, even a huge monster like Godzilla - there's one identifiable bad thing that's threatening everyone else. The whole city/high school/spaceship crew/etc is united in being terrified and preyed upon by the monster.
With zombie movies, the scenario is very different. There are a few protagonists beset by an overwhelming mob of monsters. None of the monsters are individually particularly remarkable or dangerous, but as a massive, implacable horde they're invincible. The people of the environment, rather than being united against a monster, /become/ the monster. The final touch to zombies is that when someone is killed (or bitten, depending on the story), they become one too and turn against the remaining protagonists.
Zombies are about being betrayed by your fellow humans. They're about being isolated and under siege by the mindless masses, and of being the "last man standing". This is clearly a popular fear/fantasy in this era.
Finally something to replace all those little stars I pasted all over my ceiling in third grade.
uh where's the mongoose? is it behind the human-zombies? is it in its zombie-mongoose hole waiting for a zombie-cobra to attack?
Never really did get the uber-popularity of the zombie. I mean, yeah, undead cool. But zombies are probably the least cool form of undead, other than Patrick Swayze of course.
Zombie Apocalypse is the name of my Rockband band.
We suck, though, so it's hard to find us on the leaderboards :-)
That decal is funny until you wake up in the middle of the night and reflexively put your cricket bat through the wall near the first zombie's head.
Exposing yourself to decals like this will reduce your reaction times to the real zombie invasion. This is totally unacceptable.
:-D
@mesrop
I thought they looked familiar!
benblogged's stuff is sharable, but is it licensed for selling?
CWEEKS, I was talking about the original Dawn of the Dead as opposed to the remake. I very much enjoy NOTLV-it's the best of them.
And yeah, I forgot to mention the paranoia aspect of zombie films. They are all out to get you.
@Zizak and others: Thanks!
You're right, there is a fear of the mindless aggregate mob that's more or less unique to zombie movies and stories. (Although some vampire stories have this too: The vampires of From Dusk Till Dawn are a lot more like the zombies of 28 Days Later than they are like Dracula). If zombies represent a fear of the mindless masses, maybe the zombie renaissance is not so much a post-9/11 thing as a post-2000 thing, as in "WTF happened with the democratic process? How could the majority of people have elected this guy?" :P
A couple other things unique about zombies: Unlike the vampires that were all the rage in the '90s, the zombies of the '00s are never sexy. Although both are undead, cinematic vampires are almost always seductive, while cinematic zombies (even the naked ones in Romero films) repel. Also, we never feel empathy for zombies in the same way we do for many classic monsters (think Frankenstein's monster). Hmmm...
Actually, yes those zombie vectors are on a free vectors site that says they are allowed to be altered for commercial uses. I was curious also, so nerdily, i looked into it.
I have to say.. as much as it pains me that zombies have become more of a pop culture phenom... I kiiinda desperately want one of these decals. (and ya know what?!?! I always liked zombies! even when they just ate brains and noone liked them! So there!)

Leave it to Tim Burton...
Actually, Zombies appear to embody a number of different modern anxieties. Yes, there is fear of the mob, and a critique of mindless consumerism, but I think it goes deeper than that. As we move into a post-industrial phase of capitalist society where people are increasingly defined by relations of consumption rather than relations of production, the logical extension of this an uncontrollable desire to consume. In West Africa and the Caribbean (particularly in their pre-industrial phases) zombies represented captured labor (see some of the work of John and Jean Comaroff on this topic) and did not really crave brains or flesh. In North America a cannibalism taboo gets thrown in (similar to Wendigo or Hamatsa stories) but on a mass scale. The result is the capitalist subject re-imagined as something like a Preta in certain versions of Buddhism. A hungry ghost that can never be satisfied or find peace.
At the same time, I had something of a realization this weekend while participating in the Toronto Zombie Walk. Seeing all the different variations on the traditional zombie costume (zombie doctor, zombie nurse, zombie librarian, zombie Joe the Plumber, zombie stormtrooper, zombie tranny prostitute) reminded me of Hans Holbein the Younger's Danse Macabre woodcuts: a reminder that death comes to all, regardless of rank or profession (and then later they rise from the grave and seek the flesh of the living).
I think that part of the resurgence of the popularity of Zombies is to do with the fact that directors (notably Danny Boyle) decided to get their lazy arses running. It's a cunning reinvention.
'Urg arg urg arhg urgrghrghr rhghrrhgh!'
instead of
'Urrrghhh.
...
Arrrrrgh!'
See?
Good.
@Boba Fett --- that's a really nice connection. I'd always assumed that the post-colonial Haitian style zombies of I Walked with a Zombie and White Zombie etc were not very connected to the Romero-style zombies.
Lots of monsters besides zombies bring up mortality though. Ghosts, vampires, "the mummy", Frankenstein's monster are all "the walking dead" in some regard. Zombies are more democratic and leveling though, in their demonstration of mortality.
@24 -- there's a new movie coming out (or already out?) called "Zombie Strippers", so I could be wrong about the not-sexy thing.
Awesome decals! While it's unlikely, that dude with the camera bears a striking resemblance to Thurston Moore or the Sonic Youth. Hey, there's never very much about the Sonic Youth on BoingBoing, whats up with that?
Zombies are so cool! Loved the BB p*** take yesterday too.
nothing wrong with a bit of glorified death and grunge. I have even put some crystal skull and cross bones on my laptop from DecoSticks. All in aid of making my make my mac feel a bit more grrr.
Now I am looking for a ripped motorhead Tshirt...
Zombies are so cool, I just came across some Zombie Bomber Pinup decals on ebay.... Uber-cool
