BBtv: Nostalgia 77 Octet's beatnik "jazz jihad," interview with Russell Porter (music)
Boing Boing tv's UK-based music correspondent Russell Porter speaks with Ben Lamdin, founder of the nine-piece, alt-jazz ensemble Nostalgia 77 Octet (MySpace). Here's how one reviewer described their music:
Imagine Breakstra hanging with Cinematic Orchestra, or DJ Shadow teaming up with Elvin Jones and you're close to the sound of Nostalgia 77. A dark and stormy clash of breaks n' beats, moody bass lines, and cosmic jazz. Also includes the heavyweight cover of The White Stripes' "7 Nation Army". Hard to resist whether you're a hip-hop head, music lover, or jazz freak. For fans of Bonobo, Quantic, Cinematic Orchestra, Radio Citizen, Portishead, Polar Bear, Poets Of Rhythm, and Sleepwalker.Link to Boing Boing tv blog post with instructions on how to subscribe to our daily video podcast. I just want to say how brave I think Xeni is for using her middle name in a public forum even if it does mark her as an extremist fundamentalist socialist-terrorist.
Honestly, I think this is more like my aunt's step-sister's ex-boyfriend's punk band (The Spawning Carp) fused with late Brubeck (Charles, not David) and a twist of Dory Manchester's great debut: "Living with Green Things." Dear god, spare us from uptight reviewers who have to prove they have heard of every band out there and just tell us about the sound in question. Can it be that hard??
Better yet, forgo the writing and just listen to this stuff. Seriously good. End of review.
Tha'ts why these short films are so great. You do get to hear the music. Lovely jazz, by the way. The music actually made my headache.... go away. Awesome.
The music might be great but that interview was just terrible and told us next to nothing about the band or Ben Lamdin. My advice, skip the interview and go directly to the band's websites.
